I did make the mistake of reading a few reviews while I was in the middle of this book, but I have to say the reviews did not sway me away from this book. I read a couple that just gave this book 1 star and called the book cheesy and simple. I have to disagree. This was a great book in my opinion. The movie was actually recommended to me, and the person that I am....I ALWAYS want to read the book BEFORE the movie. After having read this book though, I don't honestly think I can watch the movie no matter the actors in it or how well a job they do in the portrayal. I just know I'll be disappointed. And I was very satisfied with the novel. I don't want the enjoyment of reading the novel to be tinged with the dissatisfaction of watching the movie. I've found too often that elements and characters are changed. And not just the small stuff, but things that I felt were important to the story and how it was told and more importantly that cause a character to react the way they do. It can completely change the hole story and I'd rather not have that happen with this one.
For me this was a great novel because it literally had me moved to tears. I don't think I can say that of any other novel I've read. EVER. So to me that in itself was a big deal. I had to put this book down because I was crying so much. I highly recommend this book to others. I think this will encourage me to read more by Foer because I enjoyed this one so much. (less)

She recommended this series because she said its fun and at times just laugh out loud funny. The movie was also enjoyable so I also tried that. Sadly I made it through about 40 minutes and gave up on the movie. I just wasn't entertained. The characters, while likable enough, I even like Katherine Heigl, but the male characters just did not fit what I had envisioned in my mind. But my coworker warned me of this possibility.
Overall though the book is entertaining although there are some glaringly obvious points where the book is starting to show its age....the description of the cell phones and simple things like when the character refers to her "pocket book"....yeah its a purse now and "pocket book" just sounds like something my Granny would have said! Either way I'll likely keep reading the series if nothing else for the entertainment value. I don't feel I'm wasting my time when I'm reading it, and they read quick enough. I'd recommend the book if you are looking for something quick, humorous and fluffy!(less)

I liked that it read pretty quickly and once I started I didn't really want to put it down. I enjoyed the setting of Prague. I don't know how much research the author did as far as accuracy is concerned but I don't get too finicky about some details. This did get a bit heavy on the romance and I noticed the character Karou lost a bit of her toughness we see in the beginning as she falls for Akiva. I tend to prefer stronger female leads than the weaker, and while I didn't like this aspect of this novel I did still overall enjoy the book.
I'll likely continue the series if nothing else just to see what happens. This book leaves a cliff-hanger, which I really dislike in a series, but at least the second book has been published and I will be able to read it fairly soon rather than wait a year or more for the second book. The final book however that may require a wait.(less)

Not a bad read at all I just think I wasn't really in the mood to be reading Sedaris at the time. And quite possible like the last of his books I read I must have stopped in the middle of one particular essay that may not have been the best or the funniest and I had a hard time getting back into the swing of reading him.
Glad to mark it as read even though it was on my goal list for LAST year! I will continue with more of his books when my co worker brings me the next in the collection because he is good for a laugh with his ridiculous family stories, life experiences and view of the world. For my reading pace sake I'm hoping I am not handed another Sedaris for a few months at the earliest.(less)
