I love cooking shows and I love romance novels. So foodie romance is one of my fave sub genres within my romance reading. And Dee Carney is one of my go-to foodie romance authors.
I really enjoyed the verbal sparring and the sexual sparks between Ginger and Lee. I loved this book and it made me hungry. I wanted to cook and eat all the dishes mentioned and described. One thing kept rolling around in my mind though: I want to know what Lee wrote on the card accompanying the ginger bavarois he sent Ginger.
I loved the, albeit tiny, glimpses of Pepper (heroine of ONCE BURNED, book 1 in the series).I hope there's be a book for Max because I really think he deserved a nice, dirty chickie of his own.
Memorable Scene: - the one with Lee feeding Ginger > sweet and sexy!
Favorite Quotes: When Ginger managed to stop focusing on the individual components and take in the entirety of his face, an achingly long moment when her breath seemed to catch and her heart stuttered occurred all at once. Yes. Girly parts did very dangerous things when around Lee.
Something in his gut tightened as her tongue extended to receive the lobster, her mouth then closing around the bamboo. Slowly, breath still held, he withdrew the chopsticks, flashes of fantasy mingling with reality, and he imagined those same lips wrapped around his favorite appendage.
Ginger groaned softly, inhaling deeply as she brought herself out of slumber. “Again? Don’t you ever get tired?” He loved hearing the huskiness in her voice. The sleepy satisfaction deep within. “Can’t stop touching you.” “Well,” she said, clearing her throat, “touch my shoulders all you want, but I think downstairs might be closed for repairs for another couple of hours, at least.” (less)

I'm in awe with this story and Jackie Ashenden's writing. Here I was, opening the first page, expecting a sexy romance between an older woman and a younger man and yes, I did get that but it was so much more. The older woman was one hurt by her past, betrayed by someone she loved and trusted. The younger man was one with a dark, dark past that made him into a man beyond his years filled with icy numbness. They're both broken and they know it but he is her way back to trust and she is his way back to warmth and light.
LIVING IN SHADOW opened strong with one of the best first pages I've read in a while and it didn't let up throughout the book. Intense chemistry and sexual tension were at the forefront in this book. The sizzling connection between Eleanor and Luc just jumped from the pages and kept me completely captivated and glued to the pages. Eleanor and Luc are broken but by no means weak. Their strength shows in the verbal stand-offs that are sprinkled throughout the book. These dialogues are as stimulating as the sex scenes are erotic and made me love the book even more.
The intensity of this book just blew me away. There were moments I had to simply stop reading because what I was reading was grabbing me by the throat and I wanted to cry. Other moments it was because it was just so effing hot I needed to cool down a bit. I've said it before and I'll say it again: when you make me cry (the good tears) during a steamy hot sex scene, you've earned yourself a spot on my favorite auto-buy authors list. Jackie Ashenden firmly holds one of the top spots on this list now.
Memorable Scenes: - the one with Luc and Eleanor talking in the grass > I almost cried - the one in the 'Reading Room' bar > Djeez, that was hot! - the one with the talk at Luc's place on the "second night" > this time I did cry - the one with Luc kissing better all the spots Eleanor had been hurt > and I cried some more - the one with the ice cube > holy moly...am I still breathing?
Favorite Quotes: Luc sat back in his seat, folding his arms. Watching her. Irritated with himself and his stupid fucking cock with its insistence on wanting a woman he wasn’t allowed to have anyway.
“So, you want to fuck me,” she said easily. “Well, honey, I have to say, you wouldn’t be the first and you probably won’t be the last. But I don’t screw students. I never have and I’m not about to start with you, understand? Besides, I prefer men to boys. Now…” she met his gaze, ice cool, “…is there anything else I can help you with?”
“It could lose me my job,” she pointed out. “It could be worth it.” “What? Five minutes of pleasure, compared to losing my livelihood?” He frowned at her. “Five minutes? I’d be asking for my money back if all I got was five minutes.” “The point, Kahu, is that—” “The point, Eleanor,” he interrupted gently, “is that you haven’t seen a naked penis in nearly three years.”
For the first time in years he felt warm and he wanted more, wanted her heat all over his skin. Wanted to draw her around him like a blanket and bury himself inside. Let pleasure cancel out the numbness that gripped the heart of him, melt the ice that surrounded his soul.
“I’m going to make you burn,” he went on softly, interrupting her. “I’m going to make you crave. I’m going to make you beg. And then, Professor, when you’re desperate for me to own you completely, I’m going to refuse. I’m going to walk away so you know exactly how it feels to desperately want what you can’t have.”
Eleanor told herself all the rest of that day she wasn’t going to go. That Lucien Fucking North couldn’t come into her office, say all that dirty shit to her, then expect her to come panting after him like a bitch in heat.
Her hands slid up his arms, around behind his neck, her legs wrapping around his waist. Holding him tight. Surrounding him. The cracks through his soul began to shudder. And it wasn’t because he was falling apart. It was because a dark shell he hadn’t even realized was there was beginning to disintegrate. And there was something underneath it. Something shining. Golden. He bent his head, burying his face in her neck as the shell broke apart revealing the shining thing at the center of him. The thing that had been there all along, from the moment he’d seen her. Love. As it shone in his soul, she held him. And when it burned away the dark shell of the man he’d once been, he let it.(less)

COYOTE RUN is a prequel of a mere 50 pages that allows you to get to know the main couple of the first full story in this series and the circumstances of the plot. It was a nice and quick read, the sexy scenes are explicit and hot as I'm used to by Rhian Cahill. I'm looking forward to reading Rowan and Quinn's full story.
Favorite Quote: There was no pain, a slight sting before fiery tingles raced out in a game of chase. Ribbons of delight connected erogenous zones and pulled tight. Spasms started low and deep, spiraling out until they dropped her off the edge again.(less)
