It's also a book that understands itself very well: well-paced, witty, lyrical snark with a heart of gold, a fantastic plot and glorious characters.
I thoroughly enjoyed the developments in the characters and their interactions with each other and their world. I liked them so much that I cried my mascara off, and laughed so hard I fell off my chair.
I'll expand this review when the book is released to give a more detailed account. For now, though, I want to leave a reaction post that will entice everyone else in the world to read it....more

It is heart-warming and heart-rending (it will rend you so hard. I cry every time), engaging and irrepressibly funny. It is without a doubt my favourite book of 2009, and a hot contender for 'Best Debut Novel I've Ever Read'. Flawless, flirtatious, bittersweet and bewitching. I lent my copy to my best friend while she was waiting for hers to arrive, and now there is a Nick-and-Alan shaped hole in my heart, because she hasn't given it back yet.
And as for the sequel? I'm even more excited for it than I was for this one, because now I've seen what she can do, and I am extremely hungry for more....more

It is everything that IIf I were told that I was only allowed to read one book, ever, for the rest of my life, this would be it, over and over again. It is everything that I have ever wanted a book to be - clever, ironic, witty, adorable, self-aware, stomach-achingly funny, heartbreakingly well-rendered, and enchantingly sarcastic. It is the original fairy tale that won't behave (and paved the way for the reason that I like 'Stardust' so much, too).
'The Princess Bride' changed my life. I had read too much fantasy, too much fanservice and Messiah complexes and candy-floss, sweet-and-insubstantial love-interests. When I found it, it fulfilled my every wish, as sweet as a genie from an unpolished bottle. It laughed at tropes as it re-wrote them; it excised inanity with a gifted playfulness that had me reaching for my inhaler because I was struggling to breathe, I was giggling so hard. And then I was thrown out of my school library for laughing too loudly, which I thought was counter-productive advertising on the part of the librarians.
This book is playful, warming, clever, challenging, enlightening and masterfully, hilariously written. Not, in fact, unlike my ideal man....more
