I just thought the deceased relative filled out a form and turned it into the newspaper. So I had to read this book!
Vivian is a young single woman having an affair with a married man. She wakes up early one morning, kisses her lover goodbye, and returns to bed to sleep a couple of more hours when the earth begins to shake.
In the aftermath of the San Francisco earthquake, Vivian searches for her lover but can't find him. For the next thirteen years she grieves her loss while helping others cope with theirs through writing obituaries. Not ordinary ones with names and dates, but extraordinary ones, who give us a glimpse of the colorful life each person has lived.
While we learn about Vivian we also discover another woman, Claire. Claire is a suburban house wife during the sixties who is married and has an affair with a married man. We watch as Claire and her husband come to terms with the affair and how they try to keep their marriage together.
For me, I found Vivian an interesting, multifaceted person. I enjoyed watching her life unfold during the story.
Claire was a different story, I found her shallow and uninteresting. (less)

She picked a winner. This is the story of Roz who has to leave her father due to his bad habits. Her family(mother and siblings) moves to a small town in Illinoise to start a new life. And there they meet Tillie. Who instist that the house Roz's mother has just bought is hers and she is staying until she dies. Roz's mother needs a baby sitter so they allow her to stay. Tillie turns out to be very pivital in the lives of the Anthony family. She brings stability, wisdom and love.
Meanwhile, Roz makes a new friend at school and they form a "daddy deal" They both want to be reunited with their fathers. This pact units the girls in a common goal and both get their wish. The results are not what they expected.
A great story. A well written book. I enjoyed it very much.

During the course of her trip she shes a man murdered in an Egyptian market place. She runs to his rescue and just before he dies, he whispers the name "Amelia" and slips a Egyptian scarab into her pocket. She discovers the scarab later in her room.
After the incident in the marketplace Nellie is sure that the man killed is a spy and that she must find out who Amelia is and return the contents of the scarab to her. All the while trying to win the race and beat Phineous Fogg's time around the world.
Nellie Bly sounds like an interesting person and I would love to do further research on her. She was a very daring woman to undertake this race alone. I wouldn't have the courage to do what she did.
I gave this book two stars because the plot was a slow. I do not recommend this book to young readers.(less)
