Martin isn't the greatest author. The awesomeness that is Song of Fire and Ice is due to his masterful set-up and character development. This is a short story that takes place 100 years prior to Game of Thrones. Because it was so short, there was none of the build-up/character development that makes his series so good.
I think that what this book offers most is insight into some of the characters mentioned in the series. Most notably, the old princes and kings in the Targarian(sp) family. Unfortunately, I read the books so long ago, that I can't relate my new understanding of these past characters to anything tangible in the story.
I equate the value of The Hedge Knight to 'New Spring' which provided insight into Moraine(sp) and Suan Sanche(sp). However, unlike 'New Spring' I think that this story would be fine to read prior to reading Game of Thrones.
To all of you who have thought about reading the Song of Fire and Ice series (in anticipation of the HBO series Game of Thrones which comes out in Spring of 2011), I would recommend reading this first. It will give you a taste for Martin's Fantasy World, and spoil nothing of the story, and actually add insight into characters which are often referenced throughout the story. Just don't expect to be blown out of your seat, and know that the actual series is much, much better.(less)

The authors do such an amazing job of setting up the story, and I was abosolutely sure where they were going to take the story, and I was wrong. Doesn't mean it is a lesser book, but I feel that it had so much more potential. They went happy and comfortable, instead of death and despair, for a post-apocalyptic story... Some really cool things in this book, but ended poorly. (less)

When you consider when it was written, it definitely is very impressive.
However, as a novel, as a story, I found this somewhat lacking. The author seemed to lose focus about half-way through the tale. The first half seems to be a criticism on the futuristic world Huxley has imagined, while the second half seems to be a criticism on our current world, and a praise for his Utopian society.
Our book club consensus was that the point of the story is that this particular future is inevitable. However, without an opinion from the author on his own creation, I feel that the story loses all meaning or purpose.
Why do I even care about the outcomes of your characters, if you yourself don't care. To draw from the critic at the end of the novel; Huxley uses the characters and story as a method to expand his essay into a novel, without adding any substance or opinions; or any real meat to it.
On top of that, unfortunately, I did not find Huxley's writting style to be all that enjoyable.(less)

I'll hold back to keep from revealing anything to those of you still reading it, but I was very impressed. Excellent method of story telling, and unravelling information. I love that each story provides a different insight into Simmon's world and how each story is told in the perfect order as it builds off your knowledge with each one. I'm a little angry with Simmons regarding the ending, but I guess it's a good thing I have book 2 :) I'll wait to start until after our meeting, so as not to reveal anything further.
Jimmy - you won't be disappointed. The consol's story is excellent.(less)
