We get to see what is happening with her life and her writing career. Every other chapter lets us read a chapter of the book that Darcy is writing.
I've never read any other books like this. You're basically reading two books at the same time. I really enjoyed the story that Darcy was writing. It was really exciting and gripping. But at the same time, I was really interested in Darcy's journey. I liked getting a glimpse into a writer's side of life. When I got into each part, I didn't want to leave it to go back to the other, but I'd soon be sucked into that part and not want to leave.
I loved all of the BEA references. After hearing so much about BEA from fellow book bloggers, so it was neat to see it from the perspective of an author.
I also really enjoyed the ending of both the novel and Darcy's book.
CHARACTERS: Darcy was a great main character. Yes, she is an author, but she's also just a teenager herself and she acts like a teenager. She does make some unwise decisions, but nothing that she can't come back from and I feel like her decisions are those that a typical teenager would make.
COVER: The cover is pretty neat. I feel like they could have done more to tie it into the story, but I do like it....more

OVERALL IMPRESSION: This was a really fun book to read. It was amusing, entertaining and silly but still had a great story line that kept me hooked. It had the suspense of wondering if they would survive all of the zombies, but it wasn't too scary for kids to enjoy. I think the book had a great balance between suspense and humor.
The book also had two short stories at the end, which I found very entertaining, espeically the one about the hobgoblin.
CHARACTERS: I liked all of the characters that were in this book. I would have liked to learn more about each of the characters and their background (particularly Kali) but this is a quick read geared at middle grade readers who are probably not that interested in large amounts of detail. Nate, our main character, and Misty are best friends with hints of more. I would have liked to see a little bit more of a romance develop, nothing monumental because they are kids and this is a kid's book, but maybe just a little bit more acknowledgment of their feelings towards one another, even if only in their own heads and not out loud to each other.
COVER: The cover goes really well with the story. It incorporates a few different parts of the story and ties in perfectly.

But there was just some things about it that I don't believe were up to par all the way. First of all, I was very confused in the beginning of the book. I didn't understand what all of the characters were and exactly what they could do. I'm still not really sure about that. Also, I feel like the plot was a little lacking. I didn't understand what the plot was supposed to be about really. It didn't seem like there was a direction. I was left with some questions such as where is the story line going? What are they hiding from? What is the goal of any of the groups in the story. I just didn't understand what I was supposed to get out of the book. Now, all of that being said, I really enjoyed the last couple of chapters. They were very exciting and it seemed like a small plot took place. I don't want to get too much into the story because I don't want to give anything away, but some characters were trying to save another character and it gave the book a little bit of somewhere to go. In other words, at the end of the book, there was a conflict and a resolution.
The book was left in a way that makes me believe there will be a sequel, and I am interesting in reading that, to see if the author uses what happened at the end of the story to create another book that has a little more depth to it and a more prominent direction.
CHARACTERS: I enjoyed all of the characters in this book. They all had their own personalities and it seemed like they were well rounded.
COVER: Great cover. I love the dark feel of it and the tagline on it fits the story perfectly (She's been betrayed by life, by love, and by death.

MY REVIEW:First of all, I absolutely love the cover of this book. I am obsessed with purple and I really like covers that are dark and fairly simple.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was suspenseful throughout the entire story. I was a little bit confused throughout the first part of the story as to what was going on, but that's what made the story good for me. I didn't have any major clues early on as to what was going to happen when I got further into the book. The ending of the book left the story open for a sequel, which I hope will be out soon because I cannot wait to see what happens next (assuming there's going to be a sequel)....more
