I really like how the author quotes historians who are typically anti-Calvinistic where they give a more objective assertion on the impact of Calvinism on American. (less)

The book was not a small read and it covered both the glories of the church as well as responses to some of the churches most antagonistic critics. Can't wait to read the rest of the volumes. (less)

This book really hits home by expounding that for the Christian repentance is a continual process and is part of the sanctification process that God uses to conform us to the image of His Son. (less)

I particularly enjoyed the focus on Christian depression and the remedies that were provided. The author also had a pretty good balance of quotes from a variety of Puritan sources. (less)

The whole problem with an evidence based apologetic is that there is always room for a probability that it may not be true, which God never grants us as an option in scripture. (less)

The walk through of Machen's beginnings along with the historical background of his family was very enjoyable. At first it sounded like it was just going to be a mushy Victorian age type of book, but once I got farther in the book that all changed. The way Stonehouse describes his heavenly patience with those actively seeking to destroy his name using any and all necessary tactics is truly wonderful.
I also enjoyed the details around his stay in Germany and the friendships that he formed along with his love for the mountains and just a felicity towards German culture. I really enjoyed how he chose to take base duties during his stay in France during WWI. It's almost in his letters to his mother that he is frightened by the sounds of horror happening around him, while at the same time remaining strong in the faith.
His relationship to his mother was very touching and in the end I'm just left with a warm feeling of appreciation for how he served the kingdom and his love for all those that he came in contact with. (less)

The book also gives a good defense for some of the baseless criticisms from Karl Barth and others who don't view all of the standards as a whole. For example there some points expounded by the Larger Catechisms that are not addressed in depth by the Confession of Faith. Very good read. (less)
