Most of my friends are white het-cis male gamers and while they don't act like the dicks in this book, often they can't understand the difference between people bullying them while gaming and having people casually threaten to rape you for expressing an opinion which makes them certain you are either a "girl" or a "fag". I like that now I feel I have some better ways to explain it to them.
On the romance side of the story I felt there could have been a little more development. It wasn't that it was bad per say, but rather that it didn't overly wow me. I love reading non-romance books with LGBT characters, but when it comes to love interests in these books I prefer them to work on a slow burn approach....more

Secrets at Midnight by Nalini Singh 3.5 stars This novella didn't have the same pep that I've found in the others but I really enjoyed the sentimental parts. I liked Kirby and I enjoyed seeing a different side of Bas. Here he gets to be more than Mercy's brother.
Magic Steals by Ilona Andrews 4 stars If this had of been a bit longer I think this would have been a 4.5 novel. I love Dali and Jim and I love getting to read Dali's first person POV. Kate's view of Jim is just so different from Dali's that at times it's almost a stretch to see them as the same person. I like this though, Jim is Kate's backup person, someone she can trust to watch her back in danger. For Dali though he is that unspoken wish, something she has wanted for so long that now she has it she worries it will go too soon. Also I love how Jim now that he's comfortable Dali wants to be in a relationship with him isn't about to let her get in their way.
Lucky Charms by Lisa Shearin 4 stars I am a big fan of Shearin's Raine Benares books and so I have been meaning to check out the SPI Files for a while now. I really enjoyed this prequel so I'm definitely keen to check out more of the series. The only thing which kept it from a higher rating was my concern that it was a little too similar to the Raine Benares books with the magical seer/seeker and her love interests of the dangerously attractive dark mage goblin and the tough, handsome good guy cop. I'm reserving judgement as characters in novellas are often harder to spot difference in as the length inhibits too much development.
The Beast of Blackmoor by Mills Vane 3.5 stars This was probably my least favorite book, but still an enjoyable read. I'm not sure I've read any of Meljean Brook's other works and if I have they were probably just novellas in other anthologies. I quite liked the world in this one with gods who need to be appeased and a world struggling to return to a life that was destroyed only a generation ago. This is a dark story with descriptions of gang rape and torture, there is no white washing of the horrors of war here and yet at the same time it doesn't dwell too much on these things. My main complaint is that I felt the sex between the characters was a little too emphasised. Really I don't need hot smutty sex scenes every second page!...more
