Larsson is very serious, whereas Soerberg writes with his tongue placed firmly in his cheek. This book is filled with a motley cast of characters, which only strengthens it. I loved it, loved the pace, loved the cerebral quality of it. When I give a book five stars, it's usually for one of two reasons: I couldn't figure out the ending, or the style stayed with me. In this case, it was both.(less)

I was annoyed with Brennan and annoyed with Ryan. I was even annoyed with Lowery's father.(less)

I'm glad that I did, but I must admit that I prefer the older, saucier Rebus to the younger, less experienced CID officer. It's fascinating to see the first incarnation of the character and how quickly Rankin develops the series.(less)

The older Rebus gets, the more ornery he gets--if that's even possible.
I loved the complexities of the plot. It was absolutely believable that Rebus would be unable to stay retired, that he would want to work on cold cases. I truly hope this isn't the last Rebus novel that Rankin pens.(less)
