So I read it again. I bought the Gaea series directly from John Varley's site. It cost more money, of course, but he signs it and the money goes directly to him and if anyone deserves some loot to go directly to him it's John Varley.
I need to read more of him. And you need to read this series.
He's the sort of writer who adds diverse characters, diverse sexualities and he doesn't blast his trumpet all through the book about it. He just lets them be fully developed characters.
Cirocco Jones is one of the strongest, coolest female characters EVER! It's not just because she's badass, and she is. It's not just because she is a great leader. It's the way she develops as a character that just makes her so awesome. It's the way she cares about humans and Titanides alike.
Oh, and don't get me started on the Titanides. They are centaurs with human breasts and three sets of genitals and they are top on the list of my favourite fictional creature, along with Wraeththu. They love music, they're compassion and they're just excellent.
So, yes. Read this book. John Varley needs to become more popular than certain other writers who are the opposite of John Varley in terms of creating diverse characters. Their idea of being diverse is just having stereotypes of different races and that gets aggravating as all hell!
And should I mention that Cirocco is totally a woman of colour? ...more
I need to read this again. I read it too fast. Add Titanides to the list of fictional creatures I would not mind being.
So I read this again recently.I need to read this again. I read it too fast. Add Titanides to the list of fictional creatures I would not mind being.
So I read this again recently. This book is awesome. It's got the Titanides who have multiple genitals and complicated mating methods based on music. In fact their language is based on music, they sing, they play awesome musical instruments and they kick ass. I kind of wish there was more about them and less about the humans, though the human characters are cool. You have Robin who comes from a hyper feminist world full of radical women. She's tough and badass. She has severe seizures. You have gentle Chris who has manic episodes. They come to Gaea to be cured. Gaea tells them they have to go on an adventure and prove themselves.
They encounter two characters from the last book. Cirocco, who is depressed and an alcoholic from having the fate of the Titanides in her hands and Gaby, who is still in love with Cirocco. With the help of the Titanides they go on a crazy adventure and...
Well, reading the book to find out what will happen is a great idea. John Varley fills this book with strong, varied characters. He's richly imaginative and manages to add queer characters without blowing a huge look at me, these characters are queer I'm so progressive trumpet.
So, if you want to read about centaur-like creatures with multiple genitals I suggest buying his books directly from his site. Start with Titan, the first book in the series and keep reading....more

The Titanides are awesome. I don't think I'd mind being one. They sing a lot and have several genitals which is pretty cool. Their names are chords. There's blimps and angels. Nothing is as you totally expect it to be. It takes a while for it to go from space ship lingo to, whoa. WTF? How interesting!
This guy goes well with Octavia Butler and Wraethlu. It's super imaginative. ...more

That could have been cut in half and left more room for the climax at the end which went by too fast. Really the Tradesmaster should have been built up more. I find this world confusing. Do you have the Communist Community? The place were everyone is an asshole, the place where everyone is very nice plus the place with people who seem to be Norwegian but everyone speaks the same language.
How do you just get rid of seasons and turn off of nature? Where do the fathers of these children come from? There are a lot of questions that aren't answered so other than characters popping up in earlier books, it really doesn't seem to take place in the same world.
So this could have been better. It started off OK, looking at the Community in the perspective of a young, powerless girl and a Birthmother no less who got to lose her child. But the part at the middle is rather dull. The ending happens too fast and there are things that could have been cut out to make the story better and tighter.
Also, I'm sorry, but there was NO REASON NOT TO TELL GABE THAT YOU'RE HIS MOTHER! AND he had a way of finding out! I hate when writers introduce some way of finding out all the answers and there is not a good reason for them to just do this. Like, Lyra had her Alethiameter. And when she didn't check it, she had a good reason like she couldn't see it, or her friend just didn't want to know behind taking a hot bath what was going to happen next. It made sense. But this kid has this power and doesn't use it. He's not about to lose it. He just fears it. Just once can't a person go, I have a POWER. WOOO WEE I'm going to use it. This would make more sense!
ALSO WHY DID SHE KILL THOSE POOR BABY GULLS?!?!?!? AUGH!
This book could have been so MUCH BETTER! GAAAAAH!...more

I don't know why these people followed him and worshiped him. He was also abusive too, smacking these girls around and treating them like steaming dog crap.
Fathers, be good to your daughters or else they'll end up worshiping people like Manson and they'll kill people and have no minds of their own.
Also he had KIDS. Imagine being the son of Manson. Plus he had such an affliction of a name too. It would haunt me if this guy was my father.
This book is written by the lawyer who tried to bring Manson to justice. It's deeply satisfied that he was caught and jailed. Though his lawyer was such a jerk even Manson hated him. ...more

I can relate to the writer not wanting to be deprived of small pleasures like reading what she wants to read or having the right to an education and not having to be below a man in value. I grew up Seventh Day Adventist, which isn't nearly as strict and has its share of ridiculous rules. I first read about Hasidic Jews in Chaim Potok's books. It was interesting to see this from a female perspective. How difficult this life is for a woman, especially one who wants a broader life.
It's interesting because some people are HAPPY to have strict rules, but If I had to deal with that, I'd be ready to run screaming. No one will deprive me of reading whatever i want to read in bed and not marrying a total stranger and being expected to have babies with him when we don't know each other....more

It was just so abrupt, so sudden. All of these terrible things happened in the form of a school being shot up and that was used as an excuse to make things stricter for the main character's school. There's metal detectors, there's people going, you will probably shoot up the school if you wear long jackets and listen to music we find scary.
Things just kept getting worse in terms of kids being sent to scary wilderness reform camps and their freedom is taken away.
The ending just does not give closure and that is frustrating. ...more
The problem with this book is it's full of purple prose that makes you read it out loud and go, really? Do you really need toErg. I hate JOSEPH SMITH!
The problem with this book is it's full of purple prose that makes you read it out loud and go, really? Do you really need to use that simile, that metaphor? I wish the writer had an editor to say STOP IT! DON'T DO IT! STOP IT! You can say it's raining, you know. It's simple and to the point. It does make me want to help these women who are being tormented by the FLDS even if they will think I am evil due to my skin, but I'm sure they can unlearn such nonsense....more

I love this book, but, it's interesting to learn so much about 1928. The money, for one thing gets a bit confusing as you could get so much more with 1 dollar back then than now. The frustrating thing is how few choices a woman had back then. Annie's main purpose was to get married and have babies even though she was somewhat smarter than her husband who would become a lawyer. Sometimes Carl would get so mad at her when she just wanted to do her own thing and so dependent. More later....more
I read this book again. It's interesting how a person can pretend to be so nice and respectable while plotting to kill his wife. I'm sorry but, DIVORCI read this book again. It's interesting how a person can pretend to be so nice and respectable while plotting to kill his wife. I'm sorry but, DIVORCE IS LESS EVIL THAN MURDER! Sure folks will go, you got a divorce? How SCANDALOUS. But it's nothing like OMG YOU ARE A HORRIBLE MURDERER! He traumatized his children, ruined the life of the guy who helped kill his wife by goading him into doing so and generally was an asshole....more
