Rowling has a way of making the reader deeply connect with her characters to the point where you feel their emotional heartache. I have this great big void in my chest now after reading that book and though I knew "it" would happen (from the bajillion leaks online), I still wasn't ready for it when the time came, which resulted in me collapsing onto my pillow in a fit of sobs.

And I'm saying this from a completely biased perspective because I've been in the man's classes and he reads these as you'd expect God would. His voice is like the voice of God. Pham is a brilliant writer and his story is definitely one worth reading. Some of the more haunting memories he takes the reader through brought me to tears, which was embarrassing because I often read this book in public. Whoops. But it was definitely worth the public humiliation in order to read the trials and tribulations he, his family, and the Vietnamese had to endure. Pham is a phenomenal writer and his story is one that will stick with you long after you've read it. This book has easily become one of my new favorites. Beautiful. ...more

Let me preface this review by saying I’ve been reading Archie Comics*This review will not contain any spoilers—including even minor character deaths*
Let me preface this review by saying I’ve been reading Archie Comics since I was around four years old. So, I’ve grown up my entire life reading the hijinks Archie and the Gang have gotten into and I’ve fallen in love with all the characters. The usual comics feature clean storylines intended for entire families (including kids) to enjoy. So, there’s usually no mention of drugs (unless vilified), alcohol, sex, murder, etc. The worst Archie and co get up to is some smooching in the dark!
Afterlife with Archie is completely different. The book features a slew of murders, gore, and adult themes—all which are welcomed, but are incredibly unsettling if you’ve grown up with reading the original comics. To watch the iconic, clean-cut cast get maimed, murderous, and bludgeoned to death is really uncomfortable to read, but it’s nonetheless interesting to see (does that sound macabre or what?). It reads like Archie Comics meets the Walking Dead.
The art is dark, relying on a lot of silhouettes and blood-spattered panels, but the drawings are gorgeous and atmospheric. The panel above demonstrates how most of the art looks like in the book. It’s primarily rust-colored pictures paired with silhouettes. It gives off a kind of classic horror movie feel, matching the story in its dark and gritty tones.
The characters are recognizable, but they’ve definitely been tweaked to match this universe more. Archie isn’t a love-struck clod anymore, but he maintains the same leadership skills, bravery, and good heart that he’s known for. Veronica is still vapid and Betty is still the girl-next-door. These comics focus on B & V’s rivalry more than it does their friendship, though, which gets a little grating. Their dialogue mainly consists of them calling each other hags, saying plus-sized jokes, and fighting over Archie, making them read really one-note.
However, I was interested to see the character development in usual background characters like Smithers, Mr. Lodge, Nancy Woods, and Ginger Lopez. I think the insight they give into those characters is well-done and a big shift from the characters we see in the original comics.
I do think they handle the Blossoms poorly, though, and only changed their characters to make the comic more raunchy and taboo. There’s little point to the change they made to those characters other than for the shock factor, which wears off fast.
Despite that, the story still shines and is expertly told. To make scenes more poignant, they provide a one page flashback that reminds readers the significance of characters, before diving into the actual devastating scene. There are definitely a handful of tear-jerking moments in the comic, and searching online, I found I wasn’t the only one who cried hysterically! Aguirre-Sacasa expertly hit all the right buttons to make powerful, heart-wrenching scenes. It makes you emotionally invested in these characters and has you rooting for their survival.
Overall, the story is extremely well put together. Afterlife with Archie features wonderful narration, beautiful art, and a story just scary enough to make you afraid of the dark. It’s incredibly unsettling, but in the best way possible. I definitely recommend reading it! ...more

The plot twists and turns were expertly done with just the right amount of foreshadowing to make the reader go, "Oh my God. I'm so stupid. I should have seen that coming." Martin is really good at making his readers feel dumb. He's also an expert storyteller. He weaves the stories beautifully and every twist made me drop my kindle and say, "Wow. Poop. Poop all over. Wow. Poop. Holy poop. Amazing. This is amazing poop."...more
