I admit that a 1 star Mercy novel is still better than a lot of other novels from other authors, but i can't give it more. It isn't exactly fair, but it is because I've come to expect a certain caliber of writing from Briggs, and this just didn't reach it
First the positives. -The cover, I LOVE this cover, it may be my favorite, I loved it enough that I bought the poster. -Love how Honey gets more of the spotlight and how she is growing and changing...and more importantly accepting the changes about herself -Didn't think I'd say this, but also really enjoyed reading about Marsilla. Originally she was a very flat villain, i like how she has grown into a real character. Loved the dynamic between her and Iacopo. The things they did say to each other AND the things each left unsaid were very poignant. Those dialogues and those silences really showed the depth of feelings they had, something that all the "rumors" and side comments throughout the series never properly conveyed. Really loved how Marsilla finally gets closure. Though now that she is "awake" and no longer moping, Mercy's life may get more interesting -I can't wait to see what happens to Elizaveta (i think that needs to become the main plot of an entire book, because I can't see Elizaveta going quietly into that good night)
Okay, now for the negatives, its really just one, but manifests itself throughout the book THIS BOOK JUST SEEMS UNFINISHED
-The narrating comments at the beginning seemed like a last min cop-out, that the author ran out of time OR didn't care enough to tweak the novel itself and instead just slapped a few half-assed comments at the beginning. So if you liked the different POVs, especially given how well Frost burned was written, you are going to be VERY disappointed with this book.
-The many many MANY loose ends of the many random characters
(view spoiler)[ --Like what happened to the gas station guy? Can a pack of well connected werewolves not track a mere human down? --What happened to the ghost of the wife of Libor? the ghost of Danek? (did both ghosts get sucked into the golem? what happened to the ghosts after the golem was commanded to sunder? did the ghosts return to being individual ghosts? does Danek continue to haunt Libor?) --Who the hell was random ghost Galina and why was she important enough to get a name and time with Coyote? (it would have made sense if she was the wife of Libor, but it didn't seem like she was. She was just some random character that pops up out of nowhere and leaves, further solidifying the feeling of unfinished-ness --Also nothing happens to the vampire that actually kidnaps Mercy?? Ignatio just gets a few quiet threats from Adam? (in my mind Adam does it in a low voice that ends up super sexy and causes Ignatio to kidnapp Mercy again just to hear the threats =) Why not have Ignatio be the vampire Iacopo kills instead of Annabelle, thus giving us closure?
-How did Bran disguise himself from everyone but Libor? Was Harris helping? he could have explained on the plane
-I'm also REALLY REALLY tired of Mercy thinking Bran doesn't love her.
liked how she wasn't sure of him, but eventually falls for him. (view spoiler)[ really liked how robin reacts to amanda's kidnapping and her subsequent "rescue" by Aymery (catching her as she was already rescuing herself climbing out the window) and how robin decides she is hungry and needs to eat first rather than leave the haunted house (hide spoiler)]...more
