I like him, but he mostly stays in the background in both the action in the book but also I feel like as far as a piece the plot and as a real romantic partner for Jill. It's a shame since I think Saul could have been a more interesting character for Jill to bounce against but that's my only real nitpicky issue with the series so far really. However in this book the relationship with Jill and Saul is a big deal and is under a lot of strain. Saul seems to be having problems which Jill feels like she needs to give him space to deal with. And then when things finally get to a head and Jill tells Saul he can leaves he just goes. And then after the big climax of the book he just shows up again with no explanation why he left or what his problem was and the book just ends. ENDS. What????????? I mean now everything is fine and fixed because he gave her a hug???? I feel like too many things are left without much of an explanation or none at all as far as Jill and Saul's relationship, particularly in this book. Which is a shame because I think it lessened my enjoyment of the rest of the books. If you are going to write a big romantic tension for your main character and not have any kind of satisfactory conclusion why should I care what happens to them? I still wanted to finish the series but I got kind of pissed off at that. (less)

I did sort of feel like the ending was a little... out of nowhere. Maybe that's not putting it right but it wasn't something I expected until the author sort of gives a final clue towards the end. I don't even entirely understand what happened after finishing it since some information earlier in the book conflicts with what happened to the main character. Or maybe I just misread or missed something. Despite the weird ending I did enjoy it. I'm a little dubious about the next book in the series though. I might skip it as the characters are in the first two books in the series and I'm not in a big hurry to read an entire book on them. (less)

However once you find out what happened to the gods and what the main antagonist for the story is it kind of dropped down to around 3 stars for me. I felt like the first half of the book had some interesting ideas and I liked the characters so far but I felt like there could have been something more interesting to the second half of the book that wasn't there and I was a little let down with the ending. I did like her writing though so I'm hoping perhaps her next books would be better for me. (less)

Maybe part of it is that the author wants you to continue reading but I would like at least some things settled by book 8. But I guess for this series that is wishful thinking. Perhaps better luck with book 9.(less)

Somehow I still like this series a lot, but I'm not sure how many more books like this I'll still enjoy before I get tired of the series going nowhere. (less)

I suppose I figure the meandering is entertaining enough that it keeps me interested. That and I keep hoping for more Nightshade *crosses fingers* although I'm starting to lose hope about that. I've read other Robin McKinley books before and thought they were good, but not quite up to my expectations for them. This was somewhat the case with Sunshine here. It just seemed like the book was one big rambling. The narration would branch out into another subject constantly and sort of felt like I was reading the ramblings of a drunk person. It was like they could not stay on a linear thought for more than a couple paragraph. But even so I thought the plot line was really interesting and kept me reading. I think I was most impressed with this book out of the books I've read by Robin McKinley but it still is one of those things were you just wish it was a bit more. (less)

I don't know what it was but I don't remember particularly loving them much, but they were an okay way to pass the time. I thought since for the moment while the author is writing the Fever spin off series that I'd try this other series once again but it still just didn't work for me. It's really annoying when you're trying to pinpoint what exactly about a book you didn't like and you can't quite put your finger on it. Either way I didn't care for this book, so Miss Moning needs to get cracking on her Fever books pronto <3(less)

I'm really glad that this fourth book caught my interest and I loved it as much as the first two. I'm curious as to the next book as it seems to come back the original couple from book one. (less)
