I loved the book. I have read a lot of these stories about the relationships between Whites and Blacks in the South during this time period. What is different about this book is that the White women are not bit players. I do not remember reading a book about this period that so vividly displayed how White women felt and what they thought. It was always mentioned or alluded to in previous stories, but you did not read about so many women using the 'N' word in a story unless it was in passing. You did not read about how prejudice and bigoted they were unless it was in reference to their fathers, brothers or husbands. You did not read that they were raised like that too. It puts a whole new perspective on what was going on during that time instead of always reading how much they loved their maids when growing up.
The characters are definitely believable although I don't know how many Black maids would have agreed to tell their stories. I can definitely see the events of the time allowing these women to have the courage to tell their stories and that is what makes it believable.
I love the format of three main characters. To me, that was risky, but it worked really well. The book would not be what it needed to be if only Skeeter was telling the story or Aibieleen. All three needed to tell their sides so that we understood the perspective of the White women, Black women, older women, younger women, single women, married women, etc. Even though they were telling essentially the same story, the perspective was so different and it was all the same. It was brilliant
Kathryn Stockett did an excellent job. I watched the movie and it did a pretty good job, but there were things that it did not tell, that were important to the story. If anyone only saw the movie, they need to read the book.
This book was very entertaining and for those of us who are into zombies it also very informative. I did not know what to expect with this book, but I was very surprised and I actually learned a lot. The research and time that it took to develop all this information so that all of it worked together is great. The book is exactly what it says that it is; it's a survival manual with a few stories thrown in of early zombie attacks. The book kept you engaged and I actually finished the book in two weeks. I would read this book again....more
I am sure that the grammar and punctuation has been corrected in the final book, so I will skip over that.

I love the story and I think that this book is perfect for children who are into scifi. The characters are believable, but sometimes I found them saying things that I was not sure they would say at their age. Grandfather Goodspeed is awesome. I am sure that every kid wishes they had a grandfather like that.
I may be stretching it, but I also think this book is a good way for children to start thinking about right and wrong, their belief systems and who they want to be. Perhaps some people might think that children at this age should not have to think about this, but I don't think they give children enough credit. There may be some concepts that they might not understand, but that is why adults should discuss this book with their children.
I have read other reviews that state that the writing is bad or that it is too juvenile and I agree. But it is supposed to be. Maybe I am wrong, but I think that a children's book should be in their voice. I actually found places where I thought the writing was a little too mature.
I definitely want to see what happens to the Goodspeeds and Max next....more
