It may be because I had read the 1st and knew the world that Jemisin created already; this book just built on those ideas and characters.
This one follows a girl named Oree (loved that name, by the way; especially when you learn how she was named that). It takes place 10 years after the last book in Sky (though it's different now because of Yeine).
I really loved Oree's story and especially her...condition. It made the book all the more interesting and gripping. I've never read a book where the main character in a book is "burdened" by such a thing.
I had mixed feelings about this book the first 20% or so being that there was a lot of lore and history to understand4.5 stars. I really enjoyed this.
I had mixed feelings about this book the first 20% or so being that there was a lot of lore and history to understand before the story unraveled. It was amazingly detailed lore; not too amazing that it was incomprehensible. I was waiting for the story to get started and was almost going to put it down. However, because I am me, I decided to pretend it was the last book on earth that I should try to enjoy it.
And enjoy it I did. After finishing this book I realized the backstory and lore of the gods was my favorite part. It may have been because I was not in the proper mindset to be inundated with lots of the previously mentioned lore.
That made the book; lore. The characters were well-rounded, without a Mary-Jane in sight. I loved Yeine's flawed personality and I loved that she came from a previously "savage" people. Gave her a very specific character. The Nightlord was painstakingly crafted by Ms. Jemisin. Beautiful imperfection. Sieh was also one of my favorites. I would very much enjoy reading a novella about him. He was a very complex character as well.
Oh, and T'vril. Yes.
I loved the ending; I thought it very well tied-up. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys fantasy with a beautiful story....more
