This is an amazing story that makes me feel confident in my fear of the government and Bob Hope but more than that it is a story of a woman who has been horribly tortured, be it by those she accuses or her own subconscious. True or not, those involved believe and it is true to them and skeptical reader or not you have to feel for them.(less)

It wasn't until slightly past the middle something great happens and things pick up.
It's obvious that this book is being used to set the stage for future books and I think the story suffered because of that.
I still have to give this 4 stars because it is Cole's worst, her worst is still better than most people's best.(less)

It isn't just that the experience wouldn't have as much depth as a screen play or a comic, nor is it that it needs to be a novel to convey that depth; it is that the language itself, from the vernacular to the sentence structure to the very spelling (or lack there of) is unthinkable in mainstream literature or even small press for that matter. This book is a perfect example of how literature IS art and that self-publishing is not the waste dump publishers want you to believe it to be but the venue for what can be Hakim Bey's ideal of poetry as terrorism.
I don't know if Baker is even aware of the genre Bizarro but he has written one of the best examples of all that it could and should be. It's so weird it's undefinable but so charming it is universally relatable; you may not know what it's like to kick as much shit as Mawdsley does but you know what its like when all your nouns and adjectives end in "cunt"(less)

Although the book is short (a little too short to tell the story to the degree I think it deserves) it has a big impact. It's overly sad, touching, violent, funny. I was rooting for Martin the moment I met him, whatever happened I just wanted him to be alright.(less)

This would have been better if it were self-published.
Nolan stunned me emotionally and I couldn't think any more highly of her but as the book goes on it loses it's impact. It's too well edited, too clean, too mundane in structure; it would have been flawless if it wasn't so flawless.
If you are the type of person who doesn't like independent literature but want's something to make you uncomfortable this is it.(less)

Cutting out at least 100 pages would make this really amazing.

A lot of the romance is weird too, and can be a book deal breaker for some romance fans but I suggest trying it anyway.
Annie is a normal healthy girl but gets a fever as a child that leaves her deaf. Her family thinks she is mad and hides her in shame and abuses her (in an ambiguously villainous way). When she is 20 a local man violently rapes her and leaves her pregnant. Her story and perspective was so interesting and really sets this book apart from the genre. I wish the her POV was either the only one or wasn't included at all; that would have added greatly to the drama and development.(less)

It had a lot more going on for it than most romance novels, but you can read about that in everyone else's reviews; I just want to give a tip of my cap to the way Kinsale portrayed the leading man's illness and mental deficiencies. Mental illness is one of my literary fetishes and Kinsale pulled it off effortlessly.
The down side of this book is that it is too long. There is nothing I would have taken out or shortened, per se, but about 100 pages before the end I would have been fine skipping ahead just to see what happened and moving on to my next book.(less)

This book, although a direct sequel of #7, really showcases what Bishop is capable of doing and what the series deserves.
The book itself was less a story and more a study in politics, culture, and sociology; and an experiment of assimilation thereof. Not something someone who hasn't read the previous books should attempt to read but a book any (even moderate) fan will love.
It's as close to a handbook to protocol you'll be able to take with you while you LARP.(less)

Although I wasn't too fond of the leads, I can't give the book less than 5 stars.
The H/H in this one seemed to be too big to fit in such a big plot for such a limited span of pages and Singh just shared what she had to about them while forcing them into sexual unions.
Aside from that...Singh did a great job of piecing together the culture and politics of the 1970-80s to the 2080 time period in which the book takes place. I could have read a whole book of the letters by Devraj's great-great-whatever-grandmother, it reminded me of one of my favorite stories, and it really puts the climate of change the plot is taking into a relatable context.
One last rant I can get away with without giving anything away: The ending was just too cliche. Way to ‘and it was all better, love concurs all’ I’d love to see some permanent damage after all that drama toward the end.(less)

I have been looking forward to Lucia's story since the beginning and Cole gave her a better back story then I could have hoped for (as always). This is one of those traveling books, and I hate that, but it wasn't so hard on me because they are on a boat most of the time...I don't know why that makes it better. The book also got some of my 5-star themes in there and so that makes up for any adventuring.
Loved the interpretation of the God of the Hunt, El Dorado, and Ramna 1/2. Loved (and missed) how intense each aspect of the story is. Loved when Lucia pealed the skin from her hands like gloves. Loved the boyband joke.
