Which isn't bad of course, but the change came a lot quicker than I anticipated for such a hero. I also thought the heroine was sweet, funny, down to earth, and I really liked her and could relate to her stupid mistakes of falling back into bed with the hero even when he was a jerk. She was a little of a push over but I liked her nonetheless, but then she also changed, and she changed into someone I didn't like that much anymore. I get that she couldn't continue to let him walk all over her and she had to stand up for herself, but she lost some of my admiration with the tactics she used to get back at him.
I thought a lot of wrong things in the beginning of this book. One being that this was going to be a light hearted read, but boy was I wrong! This book was not a light hearted book by any means. It was an emotional and intense read that had me crying more than I did laughing, and while there is nothing wrong with a romance that brings a little of the real world into the pages, to me this one seemed a little harsh on my light hearted romance reading soul. I cannot say this was a bad book because it wasn't . The author really did a great job enlightening the reader on the conflicts that the hero and heroine faced. It's just that, it was not a fun book for me to read after a while. Many will love this book and to them it will garner 5 star reviews because I can see that potential, but for me personally, call me a wimp, but I didn't enjoy the kind of heartache that Ruthless Proposition bought into the story. 3.5 stars...more

This author is an amazing writer. If every author wrote this good, I would be giving every book 4 and 5 stars. I didn't even like the description of the hero. He was described as not being actually handsome (which is one of my biggest pet peeves) but the hero was written so intriguingly that I couldn't turn away. He was ruthless, and he didn't take crap from anyone or mince words when putting someone down. Here is a conversation between him and his mistress: "Have your taste become so perverted that you can prefer her to me? "My dear do you have any idea how boring you have become?" LOL! I also loved the story-line of the hero trying to make the heroine fall in love with him, while all the while she already loved him from the first time she saw him.
The heroine feelings for him was so adorable. She was absolutely gaga over him, and I could relate to the way she yearned for him. It was like a teenager falling in love for the first time, (been there, done that, lol). What I loved best about this book though, was watching the hero fall in love with her gradually even though he didn't seem at all attracted to her in the beginning. Every thought and action he did made the reader know that he was falling in love with the heroine. He didn't say I love you until the last sentence in the book but the reader knew without a doubt that he loved the heroine. He didn't have to utter a word. Now that's what I call great writing! ! There was no angst, unless they are talking about the hero groveling about something that the reader never got to see. The book just started with the heroine asking the hero for a divorce because she was tired of the horrible way he treated her and then the hero finds out about the misunderstanding between them and does his best to start treating her really good, but she still puts up a fight for a divorce. Bottom line is, I would have liked to see some of the horrible way the hero treated her! At least for a little while. That would have been angst, but we were only told and not shown, so for me this book had no angst whatsoever. The whole book was just the hero trying to make up for the way he treated the heroine in the past, and her fighting it all the way to the darn end. I was frankly bored. ...more

The writing was bad, the story-line was dumb, and the heroine came as a TSTL teenager (which is exactly what she was). It grated on my nerves that she kept calling her step mother that she hated, and thought was having an affair with the hero, "mommy". It felt like she was a 14 year old child. The hero coming out of nowhere asking to marry her because he painted a compromising picture of her was the last straw. Isn't this a contemporary, what the hey?? I lost all interest after that! ...more

I was surprise because this is a pretty popular book for Rachel Gibson fans and I'm one of them. The hero and heroine had a love hate relationship that was annoying to me. They had a lot of history between them, but I still didn't feel the type of chemistry I was hoping for. I didn't particularly like the heroine and I thought the hero came off as a whiny wimp taking out his hatred for his daddy on the heroine, so it was kind of hard to root for them to get together. Not one of my favorite Rachel Gibson....more

Definitely more good than bad though. On one hand, I loved the story - even all the un-pc aspects of it that everyone is hating on it for. Whitney was a refreshing heroine. She didn't have the same old, same old personality of the typical romance heroine. I loved her spunk. She kept things lively. Clayton our hero was a good match for her. I liked that he was a real alpha and took her in hand. That's what a bodice ripper is all about, so I just sat back and enjoyed it without judgement.
Whitney did get on my nerves sometimes though. Especially when she was pining away for the idiot Paul and taking her time to warm up to Clayton. At halfway through, I wanted to slap her. I had enough of Paul and wanted her to get over him already. Even with that, I was still enjoying the characters at that point, and the story was keeping me enthralled. It's when the book reached the 70% mark that I lost all patience with yet another misunderstanding and wanted to toss it from sheer frustration! Why all the misunderstandings? I would have appreciated the conflict more if the hero and heroine really did do something wrong to warrant all the abuse that they were heaping on each others head. Let them fight it out! That's what they did anyway. Why not let it be for something worthwhile! The last leg of the book bought my rating down from a solid 4 stars to 3.5. The book was just too darn long and did not need that drama that happened towards the end. Talk about not knowing when to quit while you are ahead! All in all though, I must say that I was happy that I finally read this book and enjoyed it for the most part.

You would think that with a cruel hero who cheats and is nothing but nasty to the heroine from their first meeting that this book would have a decent story line to go by, but the back drop of this book is a stupid play that the hero's grandmother wants them to put on! You've got to be kidding right? Pages and pages and pages about this dumb play and how the heroine is taking it soooo seriously! Secondary characters abound talking about the idiotic play. Get on with the darn story and forget about the stupid play!! And the heroine has got to be the most doormat-iest heroine I have ever read! She is such a lifeless bland weeping pushover. She has no spark to her whatsoever. This will teach me a lesson not to read 3 of balogh's traditional regency in a row. I got carried away because I read a few by her the were wonderful (Dancing with Clara,The Notorious rake, and A Christmas Promise) and was hoping to find more, but I guess no one can write gem after gem. ...more

She looked washed out and old for her age from having a hard life, and the hero didn't even think twice about her after taking her virginity in the past. At first I was enjoying the story because it didn't seem like the run of the mill. It had a jerk of an hero that I wanted to see get taken down a notch by the heroine, but I didn't see one thing about the doormat heroine that I could believe would have made the hero fall for her, so I lost interest at about 60% and couldn't have cared less about them getting together, so I gave up. The heroine was way too dull for the hero and there was no way in "H" "E" double hockey sticks that I was gonna believe that he loved her in the end! It had some decent parts that was pretty funny, but I think the author tried a bit too hard and ended up all over the place with too many implausible situations. It was good enough to make me interested in the series though, so I will try her again and see if I can get lucky the next time. ...more
