It had some good angsty moments that kept me interested, and I liked catching up with Jason from The Duke's Wager. The book doesn't really pick up until the middle though. I didn't even know who the other woman was going to be until then. I was surprised when I found out who it was. I didn't think the hero would have went there with all that he had been through. Honestly she was poor competition for Leonora in my opinion.
The hero came off as a gullible idiot at times for not realizing that the other woman was a nut job and was making a fool of him. It didn't put him in a good light. There also wasn't enough interaction with the hero and heroine because he was always out squiring the stupid other woman all over the place and not spending quality time with the heroine. I was thinking about giving this book an above average rating until I found out why the other woman wanted the hero so badly. Her reasons were a let down. I was also annoyed that she got off scot free after duping everyone. All in all this was an entertaining read, but nowhere near as good as The Duke's Wager. (less)

Here’s my problem with this book and a lot of Harleys with this theme. I hate it when the author start telling the story of reunited couples after all of the angst is over. They always start when the couple meet up again and pass up all the misery of the pass relationship that had caused the H/h to break up in the first place, which is the best part IMO. That’s the part I want to read. That’s the part that makes the book interesting. I want to experience all the horridness of the cheating hero, or the hateful mother, or the naive young spineless virgin growing into the fire cracker from the beginning of the relationship. I want to see it all! And that’s why I think this book failed me. Our hero cheated on the spineless heroine while letting his mother and friends walk all over her and she goes away for six years and comes back swinging. That’s all good but…. boring if I can‘t get to see all the sordid details from the start. (less)

This is my first book by her but she absolutely must write better by now!Right..? Right..? At first I couldn't turn away from the OTT stuff, but the writing was so dumb that I felt stupid just reading the thing- so I gave up half way through. Also, the heroine acted too masculine for my taste, she kind of emasculated the hero after a while. (less)

The second part took a turn I wasn't expecting and although it had substance I was disappointed in where it ventured. I wished the author would have spent some time on giving the reader a little back story of how the hero and heroine met and developed their relationship in the beginning of their courtship, instead of spending so much time on the hero groveling. Don't get me wrong, I like the hero groveling, but not for half of the book. I still recommend this book since it's better than the average HP.(less)

I’m definitely jumping on the ban wagon with everyone else for this book. It was excellent! When an author can keep a girl like me who doesn’t like her romance filled with intrigue clued to the pages of an espionage romance, you know she can write! The heroine was something to be reckoned with! She was actually more formidable than the hero! I loved her! The hero shined as well in his own way, just not as much as the heroine. He was so loving and protective towards the heroine that it touched the heart of my jaded romance reader soul. There is no wondering if the hero really loves the heroine in this book! I usually like my heroes a little more hard to get than Grey was, but how could I resist an alpha male that wore his heart on his sleeves. He told her he loved her for some time before the book ended and I kept on reading! If you know anything about me you know that I like the thrill of the chase when it comes to my heroes so for me to still be interested in the story after that tells a bunch.
This came very close to being a five star read for me, but it had a few minor problems that stopped it from being so. I hate it when authors messes around with the hero's looks. One minute you get the impression that the hero was very handsome and the next he isn't. I honestly wasn’t a hundred percent sure what he looked like. I knew he was attractive, but the statements on his looks were vague and frustrated me to no end. I’m sorry but I need to know! Especially since the heroine out shined him a little. He needed to have that extra something special. Another problem I had was the fact that this book had no epilogue! Things were not tied up properly enough for there to be no epilogue! I still felt like their life was still in danger, but yet no epilogue! All in all this was a very enjoyable read and I simply cannot wait for the Hawker’s story!!!! (less)

It took me about a month to read it! I just don't see what everyone else sees in Mary balogh. This is a highly rated book and I'm scratching my head trying to figure out how such a boring book could be so popular. The pages of inconsequential drivel just went on and on boring me to tears. The beginning was okay since I loved when the heroine is in pursuit and the hero is fighting against it, but they got together so quickly that the whole purpose of it was defeated. This book is way over rated IMO.(less)

All the hero ever did was argued and find fault with everything the poor woman tried to do. And there was no making love or kisses to smooth everything over and make the reader sigh. I really liked the heroine though. She was a bit of a goody too shoe, which don’t normally impress me, but she had a streak of rebelliousness I found amusing for such a young girl. She delivered the first slap to a mistress I ever witness in all my years of reading romance, and it was sweet to experience! The hero was an indifferent cheater for most of the book and it grated on my nerves that he showed no affection for the heroine until the end. Even when they mistakenly made love in the beginning and he took her virginity, the reader gets the impression that it was no big deal to him. He didn’t care one way or the other. He married her out of honor alone and even though she was attractive he did not make love to her again! Not even a stinking kiss (Unless you count the one that their friends made happen under a bough or the one when he was in a drunken stupor!) I will admit that the premise of the story was interesting- but the execution was bad. I feel cheated!(less)

First of all, it was a little weird reading a contemporary that was written in 1984. The heroine was wearing jumpers and lounge pants and I felt nauseated. It didn't even have the appeal of an historical where you appreciate the dress and different setting. The hero was one mean son of a gun! His revenge was OTT, and he didn't lighten up until the last few pages. There is no relief for the reader where the hero gives you some insight into his feelings because the story is told only in the heroine’s fawning POV.
Usually in forced seduction scenes, the heroine succumbs to the hero and you are spared feeling the outrage of rape, but in this book the heroine did not succumb or enjoyed the hero’s attentions. It felt a lot like rape when it was over,(especially since the heroine called it that) and how could you root for such a scumbag after that? I couldn't - and since there was no POV from the hero to help, it left a dirty taste in my mouth. I wanted this guy to suffer and grovel for a very long time, but of course he didn't. He had a TSTL heroine ready to kiss his feet for wanting her- so no need to grovel unduly! I give this book 3 star only because it wasn't boring. (less)

What kind of hero neglects his estates till it's ruined and it takes the heroine to set it to rights again and then he hates her because she bested him? What kind of hero is in love with the whorish OW to the point that his eye moistens with tears for her? What kind of hero doesn't see that the OW is a female dog that sleeps around with everyone even when he hears people talking about it? What kind of hero cheats with said OW? Here is the biggest one of all..... WHAT KIND OF HERO WISHES THAT THE HEROINE WOULD DIE IN AN ACCIDENT SO HE COULD BE WITH THE OW 50 PAGES BEFORE THE BOOK IS FINISHED????? Why, no other than the hero in this sweet looking regency romance that is!
When I first started reading this book a few months ago and came up on the scene in which the hero vomits all over the heroine, I instantly stopped reading it and relegated it to my DNF will try again later shelf- I doubted the "will try again later" part but still. A few days ago I listened in on a discussion over at AMI about the hero in this book and how he was the worst hero ever, so of course the sick and twisted part of me yearned for more abuse at that point in time and I decided to pick it back up again. The torture was endless. I mean, I forgave him the faux pas of upchucking on the heroine- but did he have to hope the heroine would get knocked over by the flying couch and die??? lol. He was definitely one of the worst heroes. Don't get me wrong, I had a bit of fun reading it because the hero shocked the heck out of me so therefore I was not bored (that's always a good thing no matter what) but MAN this dude was a horrible hero and I didn't buy into him loving the heroine in the end for nothing! I really enjoyed the wise cracking heroine even though her aversion of getting involved with the hero was a bit long winded and started to grate after a while. The last 10 percent of the book was my favorite. I loved how they gave each other the opportunity to prove their love for each other. I was laughing and crying by the end. I don't really like secondary romance but this one was done well. Who could resist reading about a rock star and a former groupie girlfriend? The elderly Nita was also a nice touch. Not a bad read. 3.5 stars (less)

I cannot finish this book! The heroine being brutally gang rape is a huge pet peeve of mine but I wanted to try and step out of my comfort zone and read this book anyway because it had so many other things I love reading about and the hero seemed like the kind of hero I love. I really wanted the the angst of the cheating, the evil mistress ,and the mean hero, but couldn't get pass the gang rape. It just isn't my cuppa. It ruined the whole book for me. The book became a chore for me to read after the heroine was raped over and over again and I just could not enjoy the story anymore after that happened no matter how hard I tried. I wish I was able to (believe me) cuz the hero was one stud muffin. I gave this book to one of my friends to read and she loved it, so I think if I could have gotten pass the gang rape, I would have enjoyed it. (less)

I could not see what in the world the hero saw in this woman. They did not make a good couple. The hero was a rake that had an appealing personality. I wanted to know more about him, but the heroine did not stand out at all. She seemed dull with nothing special to recommend her,not beauty, not spunk, not spine, not even self perservation since she was willing to marry a cruel man she hated to save her family. I knew I would never have been able to get into this story. I would need a heroine I could admire and understand why the hero fell in love with her, but this book does not offer even that basic element.(less)

Dear readers, I love reading about bad boys, and there is no boy badder, than Nikki Kuzan! If you are softhearted and can't handle the drama that a bad boy is going to bring, then this book is not for you, but to all the others who is a little on the wild side, go an take a ride with Nikki Kuzan. It seems to me that Susan Johnson knows every woman’s fantasies. Nikki is not your average romance hero. He is the kind of hero you save for your naughty dreams. He is devastatingly sexy, hard to get, and every women wants him. Who does he want? (Alisa). He might not show it in the conventional way, but show it he does!
Alisa is a wonderful and realistic heroine, because it doesn't matter what era we are living in, there will always be women who rebels against their plight, and take a chance on something better. Put aside how wonderful Alisa and Nikki are, the story in itself was magnificent. Susan Johnson captivates you with her writing. I was hooked from the first page. It took me one day to finish this book. Heroes like Nikki are the very reason I started reading historical romances and not contemporary. The men of that era were very dominant and so different from the men of today and it’s exciting to see the difference, but men like Nikky should be left for your fantasies, and I want to live out my fantasies in every book that I read! That is why I think Susan Johnson is such a refreshing author. She was bold enough to write a romance novel like this for all the people who wanted to read something more daring, and for that I am her biggest fan! (less)
