The way he took care of the heroine right off the back was sweet,(who wouldn't want a guy like that in real life) but I wanted a little more thrill of the chase. He fell for her so quickly that it took the fun out of the whole thing.
The most exciting part that kept me reading was the suspense in what would happen when she broke it off with Dane. I hated his guts and I wanted him to suffer for being such a lackluster boyfriend, but even that was a let down because he didn't suffer in the least! He basically couldn't have cared less and that really pissed me off. He was so indifferent about the whole situation. I wished that at least he would have been a little hurt but he was so nice about it! Not enough angst me, sorry. Why is it that authors always feel the need to let off the other women or other men easy? They never feel hurt or pain when the relationship with the hero or heroine ends. You don't have to be politically correct all the time, geez!
My favorite thing about this book was watching the heroine fall in love with the baby over time. It was so sweet and made me cry just remembering when my son was that little, and the love that just took you over day by day, and for that I give it 2.5 stars instead of 2. ...more

Unfortunately I should have stuck with my first instincts that I wasn't going to like it. The storyline didn't appeal to me just like I thought it wouldn't. The whole bimbo owning the football team didn't ring true and I hated the fact that the hero thought the heroine was a tramp for most of the book while still making out and having sex with her. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what he saw in her, or vice versa for that matter, since he was such a jerk to her.
Plus, I hated the way the heroine dressed and acted since it wasn't really her personality. If it really was her personality it would have been different and fun to see the hero falling for her against his will, but it was all a camouflage because she was raped and thought that acting like that would help her to handle men. Also, SEP humorous and witty prose was missing in this one. All in all, not one of my favorite from SEP. 2.5 stars ...more

It wasn't my favorite by SEP but it kept my interest. I skimmed over the secondary romance because I did not like Portia and was not interested in reading about her. It was pretty easy to bypass it because the secondary romance had it's own sections that were not really entwined in the hero and heroine's story, thank goodness. The storyline of trying to find a match for the hero had it's appeal, but the love scenes were sadly lacking in this one. I was also expecting a little more fire in the chemistry department. Don't get me wrong, there were snippets of chemistry, but with a storyline like this, I was hoping for a little more spark. Also, I could have done without the OTT back story of the heroine's ex. One thing I did love though was Little Pip's take on the epilogue. It was too cute... Although, I thought there would have been a much more nefarious outcome of what she did with all those phones, lol. ...more

Patricia Gaffney is an awesome writer. I was weary in the beginning because I don't really like it when the heroine goes through too much pain. Spending ten years of her life in jail and coming out looking starved and haggard was not my idea of a good start to a romance. I'm not a reader that really likes tear jerkers and I guess I lean more to a lighter kind of fun loving read. At the time I started this book I wasn't really in a happy place so to speak and I was thinking that this book was way too depressing for my state of mine, but with Patricia Gaffney's eloquent prose I found myself moving on to the next page and then another because I wanted to find out more about this heroine that had such a hard and sad life. I wanted to see her overcome her demons and fall in love and get her HEA even though she wasn't my favorite type of love interest.
I am so happy that I stuck with it and read this book. The hero is not a hero in the beginning. He was a selfish predator who took advantage of the heroine's plight. In other words, he was drawn uniquely as a human with flaws and weaknesses so deep that you despair of his redemption. But in the end his journey with the heroine redeemed him and made him a better man. And isn't that what it's all about??
Kudos to PG for helping me step out of my comfort zone and still enjoy this book. Not many authors could have done that. The only reason why I didn't give this a five star rating is because it took too long to come to it's conclusion. It dragged on a little too much and could have come to an end a bit sooner, but don't miss this book in your reading venture. It's a classic and definitely lives up to the hype. ...more
