Is it as great as some of the others in disc world, I would argue no, but it is still filled with the ingenius of Pratchett with a heaping side of hiliarity. ...more

If you are expecting something akin to Lord of the Rings you will be disappointed. But frankly you should be, why are you expecting that in the first place?? Those of you searching for some original take on medieval epic historical like fantasy fiction may or may not be excited. It depends on your expectations and your will to hate this book. If you are a lover of all things magic, you might want to look else where unless you can handle reading something without wizards and witches.
The only thing in commong with Lord of the Rings is that this is a war story, beyond that it is refreshingly different. Martin does not go out of his way to build a unique world but like any good medieval story that is based on the british, it has a rather large island that is separated by north and south. The wealth of Martin's first book is the character's, and you have the one's you love and the one's you hate. I am now reading the second book so I am not sure if any of the fantasy parts become more central to the story, but in the first book, they are only on the outskirts.
Here are my two cents: we love genres for a reason - Martin delivers what you want from this genre. It seems to me that most of the reviewers that hated the book are having an argument with someone and I don't know who that person is! I'm not sure if Martin or someone else "claimed" this series is doing something different with the genre. I agree that it really isn't but that doesn't make the book horrible. I'm not sure if Martin or someone else "claimed" that he writes "no truly moral or immoral" characters, OBVIOUSLY that's not true: the book has all sorts of immoral characters -but that also doesn't make the book horrible.
All I can say is that I enjoyed reading the book, getting to know some of the characters and some I could do without (like Sansa). And isn't that what it really comes down to? Enjoying what you are reading? ...more

It took a few chapters in before I really got into it. Although it is set in a world similar to ours, there was so much to process to fully understand this new world the reader is emmersed in. However, the side characters make you unexpectly laugh and of course the main character, Jennifer Strange, is a very likeable hero. I did enjoy this world mixed with cell phones, cars, to magic and characters that would settle nicely into any medieval english story. Fforde has a great sense of humour and adventure. I look forward to the rest of the trilogy. ...more

One of my favorite doctors from doctor who narrates it: David Tennat. So just with that I died from happiness. This book is FUN. It provides great laughs. What if you were nerdy and scrawny in a warrior society? How do you become a hero? Well as Hiccup says, he became one the hard way and more often then not I found myself chuckling. Warning: the only thing the movie and book have in common is that the main character's name is Hiccup - beware! I finally watched the movie and was horrified! I'm sure the movie would be good on its own if you had never known about this wonderful series. ...more
