I have tried to give this series a chance. I've listened to the first 2 books on audio, and that might be part of the problem. I loved Colfer as an actor and singer but for whatever reason that talent does not translate into good audio book narrator. The best word to describe his performance as a narrator is flat and it did not improve in any way in this second book. Nor did the plot or characters improve. I rant all about the original problems from the first book The Wishing Spell.

You can tell in his shorts his love of the genre, Gaiman is able to create an entire world and experience in just a few pages. I hardly ever feel lost or out of place when reading one, which is a true talent. There are some stories you can find in other collections, such as Fragile Things: Short Fictions and Wonders and some of course that are not. It happens to contain my now favorite short from Gaiman, The Case of the Four and Twenty Blackbirds. For this alone, you should check out this book. ...more

What I will say is that it is a short retelling of sleeping beauty and snow white, and listening to it was like hearing a play, so I as most things Neil Gaiman I enjoyed it. I wanted mind if Gaiman decided to expand upon that world since this was such a short glimpse into it. ...more

Organized in chronological order, these book features new and classic shorts that either give interesting back ground to characters we've met or gives us a glimpse of what happens next. My two favorite beside Alpha & Omega are hands down Roses in Winters (which gives us insight to what happens with Kara when she goes to live with Bran) and Hollow (a great ghost story taking place after Night Broken, these stories alone are worth it but the other shorts and two outtakes make it worth it too. So again if you like Thompson or Alpha & Omega series you must check this out. ...more

Be forewarned, Puck is barely in this book - neither is Ash, only small appearances. I don't know if it was the impending finale of the series or the lack of Puck, Ash, or even Grimalikin but I just did not enjoy this as much as the previous ones. I had to wait for the library to get it, and I will admit there were some things I forgot in the meantime.
If I had to point out the most annoying aspect of this book and why it was 3 instead 4 stars: one name - Kenzie. It felt like every other paragraph that featured her, she was saying "tough guy" this and that - not sure why it took the 3rd book to annoy me, but it sure did. In fact, I could have done without her entirely. And now I can't remember if I ever liked her? I am wondering if I read them back to back if I would feel different - but I did not like this book enough for re-read - maybe in 10 years.
Obviously, if you are a fan of this series or the entire Iron Fey world you will read this book, if not now, eventually. Also, I would not recommend that you read The Call of the Forgotten series before the Iron Fey. Altogether, I am super sad this world has ended and I won't get to visit with Razor or Grimalikin or Ash or Meghan. :(...more
