The story starts out in the sweltering hot summer of 1945 where 12 year old Danny Knight lives in an apartment with his Mother while his Father is a soldier away at war. By the end of the summer he and his mother move to a different section of the city and Danny befriends a young "thug" named Paddy Trolen and a few other boys in his new neighborhood. He also makes the acquaintance of Bunny Weiss, the neighborhood "Princess". Over a period of time Danny and Paddy develop a habit of pulling off petty crimes by stealing candy bars, soda and other small items from different stores. Bunny and Danny also draw closer together once he convinces her he is not like the rest of the "gang" and she decides to make him her secret boyfriend. Time passes and Danny's father comes home and the family is reunited until 1950 when his parents divorce.. Dad was content to stay at home once workday was done and Mom wanted to socialize and party so they parted ways! Danny and his father move to the West Side of Manhattan into a rougher neighborhood and Danny is enrolled into the local High School where he soon makes more friends with classmates Les Einhorn and Sylvia Torres. He also meets Robert Powers who turns out to be a thief. He and his sister Lauren get Danny to come in on some jobs which allows everyone to come away with a pretty good cut of money once the items are disposed of through Robert's fence. This goes on for awhile until the last job which is a jewelry heist from the hotel where Danny's father is the Night Office Clerk. Things go wrong when Danny's Dad unexpectedly ends up hurt and Danny calls it quits with Robert. Ten years pass and Danny is now 27 years old, a man of supreme confidence in himself which is put to the test when he lands a high pressure job with the ad agency of Drake, Hannah. Dan Knight is now given the chance of a lifetime, he seizes it with both hands and in less than a years time he has had meteoric success as a full time adman, is the youngest Vice President within the agencies history and things are going great guns with both his longtime girlfriend Bunny Weiss and his new love Jennifer Evans. It is 1961 and Dan has come a long way from his rocky beginnings, just when life seems to be perfect Robert Powers enters the picture again, threatening to bring it all crashing down around his shoulders. Thanks to the help of childhood friend Paddy Trolen Dan manages to avert the crisis with Robert, decides that after meeting Jennifer's parents she is not for him and in a very unexpected twist the story of Dan Knight is done....
My thoughts about the book:
Dan Knight is a very engaging charismatic character, he is the quintessential "bad boy" that your Mother warns you about as a young woman when boys start taking an interest in you! He is also at times a veritable "cad" when he is younger and indulges in petty thievery with his buddy Paddy, which of course evolves into major theft at 17 when he hooks up with Robert Powers.. However, I enjoyed his journey from young child to grown man. The story is all told from Dan's POV and is very much like a "daily diary" of events. There were times when the descriptions of every little detail of clothing and hair and food bogged the reading down but for me it was never boring just a little too much information... I liked this book, it is a detailed look at the life of one young man. A man who took what life had to offer and grabbed onto it with both hands wholeheartedly, using grit and determination and hard work to succeed with a little help when it was offered. A man I would maybe hesitate to call a friend but who would be fun to hang out with for sure!
Thank you very much to Ed Smith the author who created Dan for sending me a copy to read, hopefully I will get to read more of his work in the future! Dan Knight's Journey(less)

Hot vampire Zane happens to be outside the bar where Jackie was busy getting smashed after being passed over for a longed for and much needed promotion at work.... When he helps her to her feet after she drunkenly sprawls on the ground at his the die is set, he drinks her blood setting her afire with lust and then he takes her to another bar where he points her towards Noah. Jackie and Noah spend the day having very steamy sex and when she wakes up that evening she returns to the alley where she met Zane fully intending to pick up her purse from him... Once again he drinks her blood and then as she passes out puts her in a trash Dumpster and closes the lid...
This prequel was both illuminating and at the same time in my mind raised more questions... Fun and easy fast short little read that sets story up perfectly as it continues on in book 1 of The Succubus Diaries series by Jill Myles.... You will love it buy the books starting with this one !!!!(less)

Zane has left Jackie and returned to serve his Vampire Queen Nitocris, and he is not thrilled to be home! This novella details a period in time where for her safety Zane has abandoned Jackie and she has no recourse but to return to her other Master Noah... This story is short but very compelling and has put me firmly in the corner of Zane once again! I love this series and cannot wait for my copy of the third book to get to my mailbox to read!(less)

Because I had not read anything by Darlene Quinn before when I came across Twisted Webs the description made me curious to read it, I wanted to see how the author would have her characters handle not only the kidnapping of their infant twin daughter but all the other changes in their lives as well... This story is compelling, full of tension and dramatic suspense, and most of all the familial ties that bind us all together whether by blood or choice! The ending will have you in tears of joy even as it may be something you need to think about to come to your own conclusion of what you yourself would do if faced with the decision made by the characters! Covering a span of eight years the reading is engaging, the pace steady and the story just goes to show you that the world we all live in can be a pretty small place.. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was a wonderfully "human" look into a world that will never be part of my own but fascinates me all the same. Twisted Webs lived up to it's name and then some and I look forward to reading more works from the author in the future....(less)

I have read a lot of books by author Heather Graham over the years and thought they were truly exceptional, especially her paranormals set in New Orleans like this series is.. When I realized however that this trilogy would be in three different parts written by three different authors it kind of threw me at first.. I no longer mind as after coming to know the main characters of the three MacDonald sisters, Fiona Caitlin and Shauna, my favorite two are the stories and books I picked to read... Shauna MacDonald is the youngest of the three sisters who were thrust into the role of "Keepers" filled by their mother and father prior to their death 10 years ago... She is the "Keeper" of the "Wolven" race whose community resides alongside the vampires, shifters and humans in New Orleans... Danyon Stone is the Alpha of the local pack and when several of it's members turn up murdered and stripped of their claws and teeth Shauna is drawn in to help despite his misgivings..
This one is the most interesting for me to have read because I prefer Werewolf books over the other 2 paranormal species of Vampires and Shifters. I also think that it had the best chemistry of the couples because they were already attracted to each other prior to the murders that throw them together more closely...The combustible relationship between the two was riveting and the mix of humor, drama, action, mystery and "sexual heat" was a joy to read throughout the book! In this one the real kicker was the awesomely constructed reveal of the actual crimes perpetrator, you never see it coming and it was very cleverly played out. I can truly say that this third book has given me a new author whom I look forward to reading more of in the future. She put together two very well constructed and strong individual male and female characters as the main leads and her secondary characters of Lurnell Franklin, shop owner of "Sistahs", and Vampire "Banjo" Marks add some much needed levity and focus that add much to the overall story plot.. The way in which everything falls into place at the end is smoothly delivered, much more so than book 1 and the 281 page book was just what I needed to read to start my weekend off with a good feeling that lasted the rest of the day! I would have finished in one sitting except it had been a long day so went to bed and was up at 5:20 am Monday morning finishing the last 40 or so pages... IT HAS TO BE READ PEOPLE! This one is one of the most wonderful first books in a new series that I have had the pleasure to sit down with in probably a couple of years.. The honest approach taken by the author in this book makes it a welcome addition to my library and it will yours as well. I will warn you before hand though the book is quite graphic in it's descriptions of the bingeing and purging episodes, heart wrenchingly gritty and will move you to tears when we are taken on Famine's journey through the different hunger stricken parts of the world visited by Lisa and will even quite honestly gross you out in places..... However despite all that because of the wonderfully told story of a 17 year old anorexic who somehow gets chosen, by Death no less, to become one of the Four Horsemen Of The Apocalypse you really need to pick up this book and read the journey of Lisabeth... One day she was on her way to checking out and the next day she was a powerful force! Someone who, through her compassion for the well being of others, comes to understand that her own well being was being neglected and causing her bodily harm....
It was not an easy book to write in the engaging manner that the author managed. The very serious subject matter in itself is handled very well within the story. There is no preaching to anyone just fact after fact and detail after detail that allow us to "share" Lisabeth's struggle without feeling like she is being judged in any way... I hope that the book reaches a wide audience, it seems to have done so already, if we as readers can keep the momentum going and share this unique look at something that affects so many people in our world than at some point maybe another Lisabeth will not have to go through the horror of becoming an anorexic or bulimic statistic!
April 2011 look for Rage the next book in the series....
This book was purchased by myself to read and I am not being compensated in any way for reading it other than the pleasure it gave me to do so!

Just finished and this is the coolest short story ever, it has the neatest paranormal twists for the two main characters Kai and Amber that has ever come to my attention in a long time... However it is also my least favorite couple pairing which takes away some of the enjoyment.... Mal Krayl wants the world to see him as someone who only wants a good time, what he does not want is for anyone to see past that shield he has erected to keep himself from emotional pain! Having lost his "love hundreds of years ago he has since then connected only physically and never emotionally with his bed partners.... Calliope Kane is a high level guard in the Daughters of Aset who has no love whatsoever for Soul Reapers as they butchered her family in front of her eyes as a child.... Once again we return to the mystery that is ongoing while the brothers try to find their youngest sibling Lokan so he can be brought back from death. Doing this will solve the identity of his murderers once he is brought back to life and can point them out! What started out slowly in Sins of the Heart and continues in Sins of the Soul just got better and better the deeper the reader gets in book #3 Sins of the Flesh ! Calliope and Mal are working against each other to find and take the one person who is the only lead found to Lokan's death... When they finally clash with each other in this endeavor the sparks fly from more than their differences of opinion! This attraction between the two for me was not one I welcomed, the very first thing Calliope does upon encountering Mal is hurt him and he allows her to do so.. Not really the best way to start an intimate relationship in my book... However as time goes on and the pairs bond gets deeper I do have a grudging respect for the way they both seem to come to grips with the idea that this person is the one they never thought of hoping to find! Lust turns to caring and caring turns to the absolutely believable idea that Mal would die for Calliope before allowing one hair on her head to be harmed... It took a little longer for me to accept the same sentiment from Calliope but at the very end I took the same leap of faith with her that Mal meant more than her own life!
The awesome twists and turns and more turns and twists that keep you guessing about the why, how, who and what of Lokan's murder are finally revealed in the end.. The series is not over though as there is very obviously too many unanswered questions, not the least of which is what happens now that the murderer is revealed and Lokan is still out there to be found and brought home alive and intact once again. The good news is that book #4 Body Of Sin comes out in June 2011 and if rumor is to be believed another book will follow that one......(less)

Never read the first book that started the journey of John and Susan Sutter but reading this sequel which was released many years after " The Gold Coast" came out was enough for me... Why anyone would be involved in some of the escapades of the stories main characters was explained in great detail by the author and boils down to a very simple problem, boredom! When you live a privileged life there are a great many temptations that come your way that the average person never has to worry about.. Being courted by someone of questionable reputation and seduced by their flattery into a working relationship as well as a personal one does not seem to have worked out to well the first time for Mr and Mrs Sutter, in " The Gate House" history is repeating itself!
Add in a little " steam " between the players, a few rounds of sniping with the former in-laws, some very intriguing secrets being exposed, and a life and death struggle and in the course of reading this book you go from being slightly amused to completely aghast at the lengths the wealthy will go to when their lifestyle is threatened... All in all a very long read but a pretty interesting perspective that probably is not far from reality!(less)

Milagro De Los Santos is however not going to become one of my go to favorite reading about characters as not only do I find her somewhat too much, but also am not really too caught up in the 2ndry characters either... The book was a used buy and well worth reading as it was fast, easy and actually kind of intriguing in spots.. My problem came when "true love" was thrown over for "true lust" after which some nutty adventures took place, which while entertaining, did not really make me like Milagro and the rest of the gang any better.. There were a few places when some of what was going on made me smile and a few places where I threw up my hands in disbelief and complete disgust! Now to say all that I do want to read the last book to see what happens, cannot help it am too nosy not to want to know the ending of the story lines!
For anyone who likes light comedy, drama queens, insecure heroines and lots of descriptions of clothes, shoes, hair and things of that sort you will have a good time with Milagro and company.....Marta Acosta(less)

I did well, Cara Maloan is a strong, sexy addition to my list of favorite heroines in the books I have read in the last few years... Not only is this book interesting because of the Paranormal Romance which takes place between Cara and Detective Todd Brooks, it is is full of other twists and turns that take the reader on a supernatural roller coaster ride.. The author has mixed several genres in this story and it includes lots of interesting information on the supernatural communities that it is skillfully woven into the plot and adds wonderful dimension to what would otherwise be more or less the same old same old plot line... The fact that along with the paranormal romance there is a murder mystery to be solved really keeps the story moving and the action well paced to keep the reader involved from beginning to end. I really loved the give and take between Cara and Todd as they worked out their differences. I thought the 2ndry characters of his partner Colin, the forensics expert Dr. Smith from the morgue, the psychologist Emily Drake who treats the "Others" and the commanding officer Danny O'Neal were all very well fleshed out and became quite real to me the more I read.. Despite the fact that I figured out the villian to the piece fairly early it was a magical journey that I sat down and devoured in a little over a day once I got to concentrate on nothing but reading the book! I really had such a fantastic time reading this new world and look forward to getting my hands on a copy of book #1 Hotter After Midnight and book #3 Midnight's Master!(less)

The book is set in Las Vegas and chronicles the most audacious character that I have ever met "Wayne Davis", former cop turned private detective who practices out of Amarillo, Texas... Wayne is going to be in Las Vegas with his wife Ruby and prior to leaving gets a phone call from an acquaintance in Vegas who he knows through the professional gambling circuit.. "Big Daddy" Louie Lipscomb is mixed up with some pretty shady characters who have chosen him to spear head their fraudulent investment schemes, he is in way over his head with gambling debts so seeing a chance to pay it off with "easy money" he agrees to be the front man for the scheme.. Once he gets involved however he has second thoughts and calls in Wayne to help him more or less extract himself from the deal without dire repercussions.... Of course, being a "shady character" himself Louie is playing both sides which almost causes him to lose his life in the process, thanks to Wayne he lives to face criminal charges for his part in the illegal scheme! Wayne is like a bulldog on a bone when he takes a case, a real Texas go getter who has built up a reputation for himself as someone who gets the job done... In this case he soon finds out what appears to be a simple "scam" is much more sinister.... Throughout the story Wayne never lets up and finds clue after clue that takes him closer to solving the puzzle and stopping the crooks that are not only stealing from their investors but planning a very horrific crime with the millions they have amassed... There is plenty of action and byplay between not only Wayne and his client but also his partner Rhino and a few players from Homeland Security who have an interest in the "bad guys" as well.. We are taken through what can only be described as a surreal adventure that at it's conclusion will have managed to save millions in cash and untold human lives from being lost as well.. The author has created a tale that readers can relate to in today's chaotic world, characters that will charm you and frustrate you with some of their more outrageous actions in the name of justice, and most of all keep you involved until the very end applauding the fact that one determined individual can make a difference after all!!

This book Unchained with the story of Ashe Carver and Captain Reynard absolutely blew me away! Ashe is Holly's sister and the nightmare of every monster, she is also a single mother with all the problems inherent with the job! In this story while juggling the two facets of her life Ashe also once again connects with Captain Reynard when his soul urn is stolen and she elects to help him recover it so he does not die. Simply marvelous characters who come to life in vivid color as described by the author, I absolutely laughed out loud when the "Monster Bunny" was first talked about and then was "icked out" when Sharon finally described the thing! This is a story about a woman who has a lot on her plate trying to do right by her child after her husband dies and her in-laws start a custody battle. Talk about nightmares, try being a single mother/retired monster slayer who has to toe the line while the "monsters in the closet" keep coming out to try and either kill her or make her their significant other! The relationship between Ashe and her daughter Eden to say the least is strained due to past miscommunications, the burgeoning powers that Eden is developing also attracts the notice of a Vampire who wishes Ashe to become what amounts to his ticket to power and if she does not comply than he will gladly take Eden in her stead. Add to that stress is the fact that Ashe promises Captain Reynard she would help him to locate his soul urn and retrieve it from the thief who has stolen it from "The Castle", which turns out to be much more complicated than she first thought! More stress comes to play when Ashe promises her sister Holly that she would take care of a small "ghost busting job" that also turns out to be anything but easy! The plot lines weave in and out like snakes slithering in the shadows, when they are finally all connected the reader will nod their head and say "That makes sense".... For anyone looking for a mushy Paranormal Romance this is not it, rather be prepared for an action packed hell-ride that will keep you riveted to the pages until the very end... You do get your HEA, but along the way it is one heck of an adventure to get there!!!(less)

This novella set in the T-Flac series features operative Sebastian Tremayne who is a chameleon able to absorb and channel other supernaturals powers for his own use... Michaela Giese is the beauty who caught his eye 2 years prior as she was engaged to his best friend, a fellow T-Flac agent..... The story is dynamic and full of intrigue, espionage and very steamy scenes that the author is known for throughout her books... I enjoyed this Paranormal Romance with an edge of brutal danger, fast paced action, classically evil villians and male and female lead characters whose fiery passion for each other add spice on every page!
Temptation In Shadows by Gena Showalter is "hotter"! The second novella in the anthology once again is a Paranormal Romance with supernaturally talented male and female lead characters.. Sean Walker is in no way your "average" male, his ability to harness the power of shadow is not only a very handy talent but also something that has over his life time forced him to choose solitude over friends and companions... Until meeting Gabby! Gabrielle Huit is a young woman with an even more unique ability, one forced upon her as a child, which has caused her to become hunted by people who wish to use this same talent for their gain... Her past has also taught her never to get close to anyone, trust can only get you hurt in the long run... That changes when she encounters Sean! This one is a deadly race to see which faction gets to Gabby first, Sean and his group of covert operatives or the bad guys who want her for their own nefarious purposes... Truth be told this was not the best story have read by the author but enjoyed the unique characters she created nonetheless!
Hunting Temptation by Lorie O'Clare was "okay".. The fact that this novella shifted gears somewhat and featured a young female Werewolf, Jenna Drury as the main heroine was not bad.. The human male, bounty hunter Seth Gere was sexy as all get out and one that would make any woman proud to take him home... My problem was the repetitive use of sniffing in the story line... They would sniff out the scent of lust, or rage, or bewilderment or whatever emotion! Just like others have talked lately about the overuse of someone in a book having a love of all things pink, when an author keeps on and on with one phrase it turns me off what is actually a good story... While I did read the entire story and enjoyed the plot, the sexual content, the characters in the story that overuse of certain words just about drove me over the edge by the end of the book!

At heart "True Believers" is a love story... The kind of love story that we all like to read that has action, intrigue, drama and a hero and heroine that everyone roots for as the story unfolds.. This book is being billed as a ScFi Paranormal Romance and it is that and much more! We are drawn into a world that the author created that combines an ages old quest by the Alien Alturian's for their gods known as Anu (the Nephilim), whom they revere and wholeheartedly worship, and man kind's quest to find any extraterrestrial being to destroy them before even trying to ascertain if they are a threat to Earth....
The character of Rachel Cruz, who is an archeologist on an expidition in search of her father who is Gilgamesh (son of Anu and therefore makes her Nephilim herself), is well drawn and also very easy to cheer on as she finds herself in danger again and again...
Taelen Jessit is an alien emissary sent to earth by his Alturian council and when he meets Rachel there is an instant attraction between the two...
Secrets abound though as neither Rachel or Taelen are up front with each other and the fact that the Alturians are True Believers in the ancient mythological gods only makes things more complicated..
This book is just full of twists and turns and some of the most interesting and sensually erotic scenes between Rachel and Taelen that I have read that were also tastefully done without being over the top... (when I say that the scenes written by LKH come to mind as a measure of what these scenes are not like)
I fell in love with this book with all its use of alien and human technology, the blending of religious belief versus human greed, romance, action, drama, intrigue and the fact that the story flew by in a way that made the reader feel like you were right there in the middle of it all living it as it happened... If this book were ever made into a TV or Movie it would be viscerally as well as visually appealing and I would watch it over and over with no hesitation...
If you would like to know if Rachel manages to avert worldwide destruction of the Human and Alturian race you will just have to get your hands on a copy to find out.....
This is one that needs to be sat down and read for it's own sake... The book releases on October 18th and is one that I think will stand the test of time and be a re-read for years to come! (less)

This new series is a trilogy and "The Keepers" book #1 is the story of Fiona MacDonald, eldest of three sisters who are charged with the responsibility of being "The Keepers" for the different supernatural communities. The book was a very fast easy read, surprising as it was the one to build the background for the series... We have three sisters, one who's duty is to maintain peace with the vampires, one who's duty is to maintain peace with the shapeshifters and the youngest who's duty it is to maintain peace with the werewolf community... Another interesting paranormal romance with a mystery thriller twist by the author.. The heroine Fiona is still mourning the passing of her parents and is caught up in an ongoing battle for power which not only threatens to expose the supernatural communities but also start an all out war.. The lead investigator who is assigned to the murder victims found drained of their blood and posed in tombs where daily tours take place is a centuries old Vampire named Jagger DeFarge.. The two immediately butt heads as they are forced to work together to solve what is going on... After they finally stop denying their mutual attraction things heat up quite nicely for Fiona and Jagger... I enjoyed the many twists and turns of the plot line, it was a nice addition to the other works have read and loved by the author... The ending kept me guessing and when the final reveal of the killer was set forth it was not so much a surprise as a very well engineered set up that the reader will not see coming! I look forward to seeing where she takes us when the series continues in the future....(less)
