On the eve before Christmas, Scrooge is visited by his old business partner, Bob Marley who has been dead seven years. Bob Marley, is dressed in chains to symbolize the decay in society that he created in life. He forewarns Ebenezer that this too will be his fate if he does not change his ways. Later that night, he is visited by three spirits who through time give him a change of heart.
I'm embarrassed to say that I had not read this short story since middle school and had forgotten how magical and uplifting it is. It was so refreshing to see the transformation and various levels of change of spirit that Ebenezer Scrooge goes though. Tiny Tim is so adorable and heartwarming with his "God bless us, everyone." that you cannot help saying awwww. Charles Dicken's A Christmas Carol is a well known holiday story with it's message being universal, be kind and generous towards others, essentially following the Golden Rule....more

Respectfully 49 and 25 at the novels opening, both believe that their relationship to be casual until Cheri is to be married and realize that they were in fact in love. After Cheri's marriage they are separated for six months due to Lea's inability to cope with the new revelations. When she at last returns Cheri visits, they have one last romp in the sheets and the next morning while Lea plans their future together, Cheri decides to go back to his wife, saving his marriage.
This book is all about coping mechanisms. Cheri becomes distant from his wife claiming everything his wife says and does is wrong because it is not Lea. Lea just picks up and goes away on vacation but even the change of scenery still leaves her feeling morose. This book was heartbreaking. It is obvious, by Colette's words how greatly they care for each other; but due to society's prejudice to people like her and the disturbing (at the time) age gap, thus any furthering of the relationship would seem impossible.
In the opening scene in the bedroom, has Cheri playing with a strand of pearls with Lea teasing him, setting a playful happy setting. The conclusion, while still in her boudoir has a heavy air to it as the lovers comfort each other before they last depart. Despite being a mere 140 pages long Colette invokes such strong emotions by going down memory lane, showing their time of happiness only to plummet to their current despair, I had emotional whip-lash. Cheri is a beautifully written story of two peoples who's eyes are shaped like soles....more

Adam and Eve are polar opposites with a complete misconception of what the other thinks of them (Eve especially). Adam would prefer to be left in peace where as Eve has gone all Snow White with the animals and refuses to shut up leaving anyone with a migraine headache. Even though I am not religious (and by judging from the prologue neither is Mark Twain) I always pictured the first man and woman to be eggheads with a vast vocabulary and knowledge. Instead, they age like a baby enthralled by the world around them.
Eventually, Eve finally shuts up enough for Adam to tolerate her and they begin to form a family. When Cain was born the two have no idea what this creature is, varying from a fish to a baby kangaroo. After several years the couple finally realize that it is a mini-me but after a new child is born the process starts over.
I found Twain's depiction unique, Adam brilliantly came up with Niagara Falls as his place of residence but Eve, stubbornly renames it Eden, place "Stay off the grass" signs every which way, giving the feel of an amusement park.
After that fateful day, which comes off like an Indiana Jones movie minus the moving boulder, the couple are sent to what I pictured to be very desert-like place to live out the rest of they day in semi-happiness (because let's face it, the serpent made sure they wouldn't live in Pleasentville).
I had never, ever read anything by Mark Twain before, partially because it was not in the school curriculum but I believe it is also due to a boring weekend in Hannibal when I was eleven. Either way, I have discovered him now and after recognizing his dry sense of humor hope to read more of him. ...more
