Although, how Laney managed to stay alive and "free" as long as she did is quite unbelievable. Her "safety" was clearly much less secure, to the reader's eyes, than she believed. Macmillan's ability to bring out her inner strength made me like her more despite her blindness to those she believed closest to her.
Having spent time in Bangkok, I really enjoyed the setting of this book. I continue to enjoy the way Crane develops her characters, revealing bits and pieces to keep us intrigued. I look forward to continuing the series.

"See, I originally wrote it for the end of REVENANT, but my editor and I felt that the finality of it, as well as the inclusion of an event that’s been in the making since the first Demonica books, would be a little alienating and confusing for new readers. Together, we decided that the epilogue would be better served by posting it on its own page on my website..."
I've wanted to learn more about Simon ever since I started reading Cherise's Mountain Masters & Dark Haven series. And, each time I finish a bookI've wanted to learn more about Simon ever since I started reading Cherise's Mountain Masters & Dark Haven series. And, each time I finish a book in the series I remember I have Doms of Dark Haven on-hand waiting TBR. But, when I spotted this short re-release, I couldn't resist.
Rona McGregor is recently divorced and ready to tackle her fantasy list (of things to do). So, when she spots a flyer for Dark Haven's Victorian Night while already dressed her faire attire, she jumps at the chance to explore the club. She spots the intimidating Dom, Simon, but feels he's a bit out of her league. Seeing as another of her goals is to avoid getting stuck in a rut, she believes variety is best.
When Simon spots Rona he has a sense that he's seen her before, but certainly not in the club. She's definitely a newbie and he's all too happy to introduce her to whatever may interest her. He quickly realizes that she's one he doesn't want to let slip away, but how will he convince her that variety is not an option because he's the one for her?
*sigh* I ❤ Cherise! Thanks for the sweet treats while I anxiously tick down the days until Servicing the Target hits my Kindle on 28 July. ...more

She quickly lets him know, "... when I want your opinion about my occupation, [Benjamin,] I'll beat it out of you." His physical reaction to her comment was quite surprising. No matter, he's vanilla, she's not and she wouldn't dare mess with Z's employee.
Later that evening, Z insists Ben take Anne home after she'd underestimated the affects of mixing pain medication and alcohol. It was at a bachelorette party for one of the Shadowkittens where he'd first seen the Mistress without her armor - "... everything that was her had sizzled into him and stopped his heart." And, while he's fully aware that she's a sadist Domme with a rep for taking on only pretty boy masochist slaves, he's drawn to her beauty and strength.
Now he'd set his sights on the woman. And - as his team in the Rangers had witnessed - he never missed.
Anne is intrigued by this strong man who says he's vanilla, yet responds so beautifully to her commands. A one-hour scene with her is the start of what catches everyone by surprise. Z and the other Doms take notice of the incredible chemistry between them, however they all feel that the relationship cannot work because Ben doesn't crave the pain that Anne gives and Anne never takes a lover, only slaves.
He'd be hers; damned if he wouldn't. She had no clue how determined a Ranger could be to complete a mission successfully.
While these two as a couple was quite unexpected, they are an absolute perfect match. Ben is such a sweetheart and Anne's true personality really shines in this book. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the different stages of their relationship - each step necessary for them to discover what they truly wanted. As with all previous books in the series, miscommunications happen, but they are always resolved.
Aside from Ben and Anne's story, Cherise gifted us with a bunch of other great side character stories: ❤ Jessica are very pregnant (view spoiler)[ The birthing scene was an absolute hoot! I was cracking up. Jessica was laying into Z so badly ...
"Damn you, you have children. Why'd you want more?" "Jessica, you wanted children." "You're so fucking wrong. I never -" "Breathe, little one." "You breathe, you dickhead. How could you do this to me? You told me you weren't a sadist, you fucking liar."
Seeing her in such pain was terribly difficult for the steely Dom to handle, but they made it through and welcomed Lil Miss Sophia Grayson into the world. Happy Birthday, Sophia!
Side note: Simon, from Mountain Masters/Dark Haven (Simon Says: Mine: A novella and others), makes a hidden appearance when he added a security system to Z & Jessica's home. (hide spoiler)] ❤ Happy 35th Birthday, Anne! (view spoiler)[ The women of the Shadowlands, all the kittens and Olivia, the other resident Domme, threw Anne a surprise birthday party. It helped Anne fully realize the true friendships she's built. Being a military brat, she's kept herself closed off. These women have slowly, but surely crept their way into her heart. (hide spoiler)] ❤ Uzuri is sure to be featured in book #11 (view spoiler)[Z has allowed Uzuri to make her past a hard limit, so no one is entirely sure what she's experienced in the past. What they do know is that her time for secrecy is almost up and she'll soon be encouraged to face her past - but not alone, I'm sure. Everyone will be there for her, as they were in this book, when she needed help moving into a new home. This was another great 'everyone is all together' scene.
Furthermore, the intruder scene at Anne's home forces Uzuri to accept her need for self-defense lessons. The other ladies have been training with Anne and now it's time she stop cowering and start empowering. (hide spoiler)]
I always enjoy it when Cherise shows her character's lives outside of the club. This book had quite a few. I just cannot get enough of this series. I always look forward to spending quality time with Cherise's Shadowlands gang.
As of 14 Apr, per Cherise's newsletter: I’m deep into writing Servicing the Target, the next book in the Masters of the Shadowlands series. Honestly, I’ve been postponing writing a book about Mistress Anne because of those pretty boys who follow her around. So not my thing.
But then Ben—yes, I mean Ben the over-sized, rough-looking Shadowlands security guard—told me he was going to make his move.
I had a fit. “Oh, please. Seriously, Ben? Are you out of your friggin’ mind?” I told him he was vanilla. That she likes younger men. Gorgeous slim ones.
He didn’t listen. And when an ex-Army Ranger sets his sights on a target…everyone had best step out of the way.
As of 12 Feb, per Cherise's blog: Ben–the security guard–says he’s interested in spending time with Mistress Anne. (Seriously?) I told him he’s out of his mind. But he’s stubborn.
And then Master Z informed me that it’s time for Jessica to have that baby of theirs. A woman in labor versus the Master of Masters. O.O What?!? At least we have Eighth Grave After Dark to look forward to in May.
In a small village in New York lives Jane Doe, a girl with no memory of who she is or where she came from. So when she is working at a diner and slowly begins to realize she can see dead people, she's more than a little taken aback. Stranger still are the people entering her life. They seem to know things about her. Things they hide with lies and half-truths. Soon, she senses something far darker. A force that wants to cause her harm, she is sure of it. Her saving grace comes in the form of a new friend she feels she can confide in and the fry cook, a devastatingly handsome man whose smile is breathtaking and touch is scalding. He stays close, and she almost feels safe with him around.
But no one can outrun their past, and the more lies that swirl around her-even from her new and trusted friends-the more disoriented she becomes, until she is confronted by a man who claims to have been sent to kill her. Sent by the darkest force in the universe. A force that absolutely will not stop until she is dead. Thankfully, she has a Rottweiler. But that doesn't help in her quest to find her identity and recover what she's lost. That will take all her courage and a touch of the power she feels flowing like electricity through her veins. She almost feels sorry for him. The devil in blue jeans. The disarming fry cook who lies with every breath he takes. She will get to the bottom of what he knows if it kills her. Or him. Either way.

(view spoiler)[ Griffin had inherited The 8th Circle from Kingsley. The club was his responsibility and it took more of his time than Griffin ever dreamed it would. Wrangling wayward submissives and putting pro-Doms into place and planning private parties and wooing new clients…Griffin had a new respect for Kingsley after all that. It was fun, empowering. And Griffin loved it. But what he hadn’t loved was the time it took away from him and Mick.
Nico. King’s son. She’s [Nora's] fucking King’s son Nico. Not just fucking him. She collared him. She owns him.
King and Søren are together again. Like for real for real. Which is why Søren’s so happy and horny all the time, and Nora’s so happy and horny, because she had a sub now and it’s…oh my God, it’s insane. Søren has King and Nora. Nora has Søren and Nico and King has Juliette and Søren and it’s like the sexiest love hexagon ever. (hide spoiler)]
“Christmas in Suite 37A”: Part 1 : Blue Christmas Read @ 16 Dec 2014 (view spoiler)[Griffin is staying with Nora. Mick has left for Europe. He requested no contact and, so far, Grif has been able to respect his wish. But, it's been 3 months and he's aching for his sub.
Nora takes Grif to Søren's Christmas Mass. While there, she convinces him that he should at least text Mick and see what happens. (hide spoiler)]
Part 2 : Silver Bells Read @ 19 Dec 2014 (view spoiler)[Griffin rec'd a reply to his text. Mick has agreed to meet him. He's over the moon and believes it to be an answered Christmas wish.
Determined to make the time together special, he asks Mick to meet him at a place that holds a lot of meaning for Grif - Suite 37A at the Waldorf.
Mick and Grif share a meal, chat about what's happened to both during their separation. Mick explains why it was important for him to leave:
“Nora…” Mick began and met Griffin’s eyes. “She told me a long time ago that the reason she left Father S was because there was someone she needed to be, and she couldn’t be that person and be with Father S at the same time. And that’s why I asked for the break from you. Because there was someone I had to be, and you weren’t letting me be him.”
Part 3 : White Christmas Read @ 22 Dec 2014 (view spoiler)[Mick and Grif retire to Suite 37A. Griffin gives Mick his present. It's a letter he wrote ten years ago. He knows he wrote it for Mick.
Dear Whoever is Reading This, I'm in love with you.
I don't know you yet, but I'm going to keep this letter until I meet you.
While staying with King, Griffin, in a coke-induced haze, wrecked his home. King took him to the Waldorf, this very suite 37A, and asked Griffin if he had anything worth living for. Griffin's answer, 'You.' So, the night before heading to rehab, Grif wrote this letter knowing that one day he would find his love.
The two, having worked through the issues that lead to the separation are Dom and sub once again.
