Matthiessen's adventures are interesting and it's always fun to hear about old friends such as Richard Leaky and George Adamson. Since this was written in 1969/70, it would be interesting to read something now that is about the same areas recently.

What Mueller has to say about oils sold as Extra Virgin here in the states is truly mortifying!
A very thought provoking book and perfectly timed with all the other current food scandals in this country.(less)

I don't care how math phobic you are, Jeffrey Bennett, who has a can do attitude that puts cheerleaders to shame, will make you feel comfortable and even smart as he walks you through some interesting and important examples of math in every day life. I hope this book ends up in some classrooms across the country - it would be a perfect addition for a life skills class!(less)

As an active and informed member of an international professional women's service organization that works for women's rights across the globe - Soroptimist International - nothing about the status of women that was presented was a surprise. What was pleasing about the book for me was the stories of the nonprof's and NGO's that were making a difference through grass root campaigns. I learned about some groups I hadn't heard of before, heard the beginnings of some groups I actively support, and was reminded that yes, indeed the efforts that I do here do mean something.
My biggest complaint about the book is that the authors made a push to wealthy women to stop supporting the arts as they do and supporting oppressed women. Balance... both are important. While a thing is not a human life, the arts are important too - perhaps there should have been a little more moderation in their plea.
Beyond that the book was interesting -especially the rather dramatic actions of the authors in several situations!
A highly suggested read for anyone even vaguely interested in knowing the answer to the question "Are women human yet?" (less)

Hawken does a fantastic job of reminding us that everything is tied together and we must work together and see the big picture to accomplish our goals.(less)

I really liked that he spent a great deal of time exploring the impacts on South America - so many authors only want to talk about the settlement of North America. I learned some fun science, had some notions challenged and in general enjoyed this book very much.(less)

For obvious reasons there's lots of characters (various generals, majors, etc) and he manages to come up with a unique voice for all.
Beyond the great narration, the book is a wonderful peek into the minds and actions of these men, both union and rebel and the crucial decisions they made at Gettysburg.
