Coming across the references to the weather in Celsius (as opposed to Fahrenheit), and kilometers (instead of miles), and the heroine calling people cheeky...pulled me out of the story...more times than i can recount)
Plus the main characters, supposedly 18, and seniors in high school come off like they're 5 years younger... and more judgey than i was expecting. Some of the stuff these characters say/think seem sorta snotty. Altogether, Shiver just wasn't for me. 2 stars, because I was able to make it to the end of the book, without giving up on it. ...more

It took me just under a year to read book one, because the begining was just too....slow/uninteresting, and I almost decided to put this one down as well, but for one reason or another, I made it to the end....And I have to say, I hate how the author ended the book, even if I can see why she ended it that way( or at least why I think she did). It's not the first story I've read that has an ending like this, but every time I come across them, I'm left with the same thought: it's a cop out.
So now, I don't know if I'll read anything new from VR, I'm not sure I'd trust her with my time again, but maybe later, I'll attempt to read the bits(novellas?) from Fours' point of view, we'll see.
And honestly, If I'd read spoilers for this, I probably would've stopped reading, early on... As it is, I'm still working out whether or not I'm happy I read this series at all. One on hand, I'm glad I experienced ms Roths' writing style, but on the other, I feel like I've wasted time on this series, when I could've read something that didn't leave me in a mix of confusion, disappointment, and frustration.
2 stars, bit it's more like somewhere in the range between 1 and 3 stars....more

Add to that, the heroine seemed super young...I don't remember how old she was supposed to be, but her reactions to things made her sound like shew as just entering her teen years, rather then coming close to leaving them behind (I think she was supposed to be 17-ish). Also there, IMO, was little to no chemistry between this Persephone and Hades. oh and a pet peeve popped up too, every time P and H and were having a convo where actual info could be exchanged...something interrupted them. i would've been okay with it once or twice but it happened enough times that it seriously annoyed me. Also the world building was just okay...like we got a little info, but not nearly enough to form a solid picture in your head. So yeah, altogether it was an okay read, but I'm not super excited about reading the next book. ...more

The beginning for the most part ( minus some stereotypical descriptions of trailer park living and very little world building ) was pretty well written....I really thought this was going to be a 4 star read.
Everything was going swimmingly, right up until the hero of our story, who's woken up, naked, alone, and with no memory, literally runs into his past...from this point on, very little made sense. I kept going from being confused, as to why certain characters did what they did, to wanting to itch slap them for being idiots. So yeah, 2 stars for the second half of the book. Also the book ends, in a not so happy place, and you'll have to wait for the next book to see what happens. Having said that, I probably won't be reading it. not sure it it was the disappointing second half of the book or if I just want something with a little more depth to it, either way, I'm just not interested in seeing what happens. ...more

Okay wait, first the negatives: IMO, there's really only a couple major issue, but it's enough I had to deduct a star: one minute the MC's are meeting and going through their getting to knows you's, the next they're ILY-ing each other...and I have no idea how that came about. Seriously, it totally blindsided me. Also we really don't know enougha bout teh hero...would have LOVED to learn more about him,and this is more a preference than a negative, but I want to read a few paragraphs -at least- from the his pov!
But the rest of the book, was soo good, I broke my self imposed rule of not staying up past midnight to read! (on a side note, I am sooo tired as I'm writing this :p )
As for the world, honestly I just want to know more...and I want to know where the MC's and co are gong next....and I want to know the answer to the questions surrounding the h's parent/family. See, maybe that's why it's soo good, I just finished it, and already I want to know more. It's not a perfect book, there was one or two very minor things that bugged me, beyond what I wrote above, but the rest of the story overshadows them, that now, I can't even remember what they were...and I was too engrossed to stop and make a note of any of it :)
Okay, so reading back, I know that's not very informative, so: Beautiful Decay is written in first person, from the heroines pov, is a quick, and easy read, pretty tame on the YA heat factor, IIRC, has few if any real info dumps (though this may be why I'm itching for more), and very little angst, and a pretty engaging over all story. Maybe it's supernatural aspect isn't 100% original, but it's def off the beaten track.
Oh and how's about this: necromancers, viviomancers, zombies, and who knows what else abound in the world of BD. If you're a fan of any of those definitely give this a try....though to be fair, if you're like me, and not particularly into any of them, you should try it anyway, you might be surprised how easy it is to get sucked in!

also , Imo, we don't really get enough info on the H and his family...or on their powers...Or the whole population of people like them .in other words, there's not a whole lot of world building. Even when the h learns the secrets she was scared to learn, everything seems very vague. I felt like there should have been more.
OhThe h! She's a goody goody, meek character, who is hard to like. Shes got a few scenes wheres she gets mad, but honestly every time they come up, she comes off as a mouse. As someone with a bit of a temper, it's hard to read about someone who doesn't do angry very well...half the time, people's reactions were either laughing or stifling their smiles...really? All the way to the end of the book, shes like this...am i supposed to find this endearing? if so, it didn't work. Also she doesn't curse....which okay, isn't necessary, and it's a small thing, and maybe im reading more then there is to it, but I irritated me, because it felt like she was trying too hard not to say a bad word, because good girls don't cuss, rather the having any real opinion on the subject.
Okay, so one part I liked, was when the H and h are together. Those scenes were cute. I do wish they went from being enemies to not enemies, much more gradually, but still, I liked them them, together. Probably the best bits of the book, really.
Oh and lastly, the plan to end all their troubles at the end...not bad, but it also seemed weird to find it in ya PNR .. I've read plans like that in RS titles, or even contemps masquerading as rs titles, but not in ya before, or maybe cuz it's supposed to be a para book, that I expected a para ending to things...either way. The big plan, seemed out of place...and didn't fit.
So, if we're sticking to gr's guidelines, this was a 2.5 ...a little better then okay, but I don't know if I'd say I liked it. ...more

I loved the idea...celebrity angels! ( for seems reason I seem to have more interest in fictional celebs than real ones, go figure :p)
Anyway here's what I didn't love and what's keeping me from giving IC a higher rating:
The heroine's unceasing naivete...she kept making the wrong decisions, and what she thought would be the consequences for her actions were just so ridiculous! Add to that, there's little actual world building, and occasionally smaller scenes would get glossed over...oh and the H's cookie cutter bitchy ex...she (along with a few others) was so freaking one dimensional! Oh and some of the writing seemed a bit juvenile, and IC features a 's a good case of instalove (though its the h semi-fighting the relationship, rather than the H) but despite all that, there's something about Immortal City that pulls you in and makes you keep reading...so yeah I had a few issues with this one, but I'm definitely going to read the next one!
