I absolutely love Richelle Mead as an author, granted I haven't read her über popular Vampire Academy series, but I've read her adult series, Georgina Kincaid and Dark Swan, and loved them. As soon as I heard about this one, I knew I had to have it. So, as I started reading this I noticed that this world was going farther in-depth than I expected, this is a very intricate world with a very in-depth hierarchy and caste system. It took me a while to get through, though honestly it was because finals got in the way, and there were parts that just really dragged out, but those parts are really important. There really isn't anything excess in this book and though I wish there were just a touch more romance, I'm sure there will be more to come. I loved the characters, there is just so much going on with each of them, we're just looking and the surface in this book. There is so much more I want to know, and so much I wish would happen, this whole book is like a massive opener to what looks to be a fantastic whirlwind of a series. At first, or really the majority of the book had a sci-fi feel and in part it is, there is a lot of science going on with the restriction of religion because it just turns out zealots, I don't know how to really describe it without giving plot keys away, so I won't. There's some great mythology built-in and lots of science type stuff and A LOT of background information, but again this is just the first book of the series and this is world is much more massive than her other series, in my opinion, so it's going to take a lot more information. I think Ms. Mead has done a fantastic job weaving a wonderfully intricate futuristic, and different type, of world for us to get lost in, characters for us to root for, and time for us to figure out what could happen next. ...more

OMG I literally just finished this book, and IFirst off THANK YOU Harlequin Teen for this advanced copy, I was soo excited to get this book to review.
OMG I literally just finished this book, and I will tell you right now, it's fantastic. Imagine the last book, now think better. It's wonderful, I generally like the second books better anyway because we already know the world the characters are in so we don't have all that world building to deal with, which means that we, as readers, get to dive right in to the meat of the story, which leaves off where the last book ended. Allie is on a hunt to find Kanin, she's having those dreams and a pull to find her creator/sire and she knows she's got a heck of a battle ahead of her. OH goodness, there are so many surprises and twists and turns, which I of course will not spoil for you so I'll not stray beyond the writing and the blurb of a description the publishers provide.
So I've read the Iron Fey series or at least a few of them, and this series far surpasses that one. I think that the author really just puts a grown up spin on this young adult series that isn't all teen angsty and makes you forget the young adult aspect of it. There is some swearing and this is a more violent and bloody series, which is just awesome, there is some great action in this book. Allie is just more bad ass than Meghan and this story just feel like it is more unique and has a little more than you'd expect. I know that vampires are everywhere right now, but this isn't your young adult sparkly vampire story, it feels more honest, grittier with truer emotions. You can see this world as reality instead of some frolicking in the tulips kind of fairy tale with happily ever after, as seen in book one there are heart wrenching moments, and this story just rips you apart. You've got lots of laugh out loud moments, plenty of action, a few lovey dovey moments, great devotion and wonderful character development. You have characters you love to hate but secretly love anyway. The bad guy is unequivocally bad, but there are so many grey areas, so many ways this story can go. This book has yet to be released and I'm waiting already on pins and needles for book 3 to come, because damn, leaving us hanging....more
