Richard Ford has written a simmering crime/murder story that is a great read more for the stark writing than the plot. The story is a recollection of a 15 year old boy's terrible start to life--his parents rob a bank and are caught, leaving him and his sister to navigate their own futures. The writing has a flavor of Cormac McCarthy with its Western feel and simplicity of language. There's a surprising amount of insight for a novel, as the narrator is describing his story through the filter of time. This is a great read for people who like mysteries but like good writing even more. (less)
