Israel leads the way, even takes in Palestinian refugees. An engineer of South African apartheid receives redemption and a bear hug from Nelson Mandela after coming up with a plan that will mean the death of the majority of South Africans living in those in-defensible shantytowns. The former Soviet bloc governments brutally kill their own soldiers and civilians. Cuba becomes democratic and liberated through market reforms and the good influence of USAmerican refugees. The middle-eastern countries just all nuke each other. The Japanese government's commitment to de-militarization doomed the country. Meanwhile, good ol' USA got bogged down by an over-educated liberal-minded population, but stays true to democracy. And Paris Hilton is a whore who had it coming.
Brooke doesn't seem able to write a non-USAmerican character without relying on lazy national stereotypes (the Japanese characters being particularly awful), heck, even most of his USAmerican characters are just variations of bootstrappin' cowboys saving the day.
Combined with the unbearably smug tone throughout the book, this was a tough read. ...more

Those five years are rich with material that Hannigan presents with a fresh eye, sensitive to the Javanese side of the story. The author sometimes seems to be nursing a grudge against his subject - the treatment of Olivia Raffles is downright mean - but the cloud of myth around Raffles is apparently pretty thick, and the author cuts through it with som...more flag like · comment · see review mahatma Apr 20, 2013 mahatma rated it 3 of 5 stars · review of another edition Shelves: belum-selesai "it would have been better if we had been colonized by the british, not the dutch."
