Since it is mostly comics put together in a book, most pages have the basic four-panel comic with the punchline in the fourth panel. Sometimes the comics next to each other can be put together to create more of a continuous story. Other times a comic’s subject changes from one page to another only to come back to a vague overarching theme once again. Sometimes there is a comic that has eight panels all on one page. These bits add the same amount of comedic humor to the book as do the rest of the comics. Each panel is illustrated in full color and is the same style as all other Big Nate comic compilations and Big Nate novellas. With the edition of a “pull-out” Big Nate poster, readers who are a fan of the series will especially enjoy this look at this edition of Big Nate....more

Chu is worried about if everyone will be nice or if everyone will like them. After assurances from his parents he heads to school. The teacher wants the class to introduce themselves to each other and tell what they do best. The teacher writes each student’s name on the chalkboard. But there isn’t enough room, so she has to erase…which creates a lot of chalk dust. And that results in something that Chu does best.
This is another good story about the first day of school. I like how there are fun details about the classroom (alphabet animals on top of the classroom and such). And of course when Chu starts to sneeze he puts his goggles on. So many cute details. But over all, young readers will be reassured that even if they do something big (like Chu’s gigantic sneezes) school can still be fun, kids will still be nice, and teachers will still like you. This book is part humor and part a comforting bowl of chicken noodle soup for the nervous newbie kindergarteners. Fun....more

But because it is school there are some fun subtleties that let you know it is a school setting. For example the title page looks like it is on the lined paper school kids use to learn how to write (the type with solid lines at the top and the bottom with a dashed line in the middle). Also, there are a lot of illustrations where it is just an outline of the characters with a few added extras (like googly eyes) that give the story a feeling of happy kindergarten school days (especially with the scribbled drawings that perfectly showcase fun emotions typical of children in a style similar to what a child could draw–if the child could draw as well as Bob Shea). Plus there are fun little details like monster Buddy on the lunchbox that will delight fans of Bob Shea. As usual I love how there are some drawings and some photos of different objects (like the different lunch foods) that give the illustrations depth. And every grownup who reads this will absolutely laugh at the expressions of children who are told to clean up. The more I read Bob Shea books the more I have to look to see those extra details that make me love his books. And this new Dinosaur book is another happy edition to add to my story time booklists....more

But they aren’t convinced Penguin can flyPenguin wants to fly, so he heads to a “flight school” where two teacher birds teach other birds how to fly. But they aren’t convinced Penguin can fly. After all, Penguin is a penguin and penguins can’t fly. But Penguin wants to try and works hard to figure out just how to lift off. After a lot of unsuccessful attempts Penguin starts to leave dejected that he can’t follow his dreams of soaring in the air. But Flamingo comes up with an idea and soon Penguin can feel the sensation of soaring through the air. This is an amusing tale of one determined little bird with the “soul of an eagle.” Kids who know about penguins and the other birds that don’t actually fly will find this an amusing tale with a fun ending. And that creativity and determination are often the most important parts of working hard. This is one of those fun tales that will be enjoyed over and over again....more

However, wheWhitney Richards is the captain of the cheerleading squad. She is also trying to be the perfect daughter that her mother wants her to be. However, when her boyfriend, the captain of the football team breaks up with her on Valentine’s Day, she realizes that she isn’t all that upset about it. In fact, she never really enjoyed being his girlfriend all that much anyway. When her mother finds out that Whitney didn’t do very well on one calculus test she goes ballistic and makes Whitney get a math tutor. Whitney’s tutor, Taylor, is smart, has similar values, and is becoming Whitney’s best friend. Only her friends and mother are concerned because he is poor and comes from the wrong side of town. Whitney is tired of being controlled by what she should or shouldn’t do or be. Instead she wants to do her own thing and discover who she really is.
This is a fun, religious story about a girl who is trying to become her own person. However, the story is told in such a way that I felt like Whitney’s character kept telling me what was going on instead of just reading the story. And that did drive me nuts just a little bit. But I liked how this was a story about a good Christian girl who wasn’t an over the top crazy Christian that I have seen in other young adult literature lately. There are a lot of prayers and thoughts that Whitney thinks through to show how she feels and what her frustrations are and how she turns to God to solve them. But those who do not like religion in their stories will find it too much to deal with. Although it seems like a realistic amount for someone like Whitney who goes to church and youth group every week. This is a good, light story for those who like a character with a bit of religion in her soul....more

From a dirty shirt and syrup in his hair, this youngster just doesn’t really have good luck in getting to school in one picture-perfect piece. Things are so over the top that kids will laugh at the over-the-top craziness that happens (the person in line before him got the last complimentary comb…even though there was only one that really needed to have his hair combed). And of course, by the end readers will understand just what “perfect” means to this little trouble-maker....more
Desmond Pucket has a thing for monsters. He loves them and loves doing practical jokes to bring out the monster thrill in everyone. Only, not everyoneDesmond Pucket has a thing for monsters. He loves them and loves doing practical jokes to bring out the monster thrill in everyone. Only, not everyone is all that excited about his spooky entrances, fake blood, or scary stories. Mr. Needles (the school disciplinarian) is one of those people. In fact, he is so sick of the jokes that he is sure Desmond has done (only he can’t prove most of them) that he is jumping at the chance to kick Desmond out of school. When Desmond’s older sister Rachel has a slumber party, Desmond can’t help but scare everyone a bit…only Mr. Needles’ daughter was one of the girls sleeping over. And not Desmond only has three chances to change his ways or be kicked out. And if he is kicked out he can’t go on the class field trip to “Mountain Full of Monsters” (which he has only been wanting to go to for four years).
His three chances include being part of an extra curricular activity. His three options are A/V Club, Newspaper Staff, and Drama Club. He totally gets booted out of A/V Club (and he deserved it). But is sabotaged out of the Newspaper Staff. When things start happening that look like monstrous practical jokes in Drama Club, Desmond gets nervous. Because now he is not the one doing the monstrous mayhem. Will Desmond be able to figure it all out in time to save himself from being kicked out of school (and more importantly to be able to stay long enough to go on the class field trip).
This is a hilarious book. Desmond is one funny kid, the type of kid that would get most people to laugh along with him (if they weren’t too frightened by the actual monster-bit of his jokes). And readers will laugh along with Desmond in part due to the hilarious illustrations scattered throughout the text. In fact, there are two kinds of illustrations. First is the illustrations that show just what is happening to Desmond and crew. The second type of illustrations are the type that Desmond “drew” to show his plans or his particular ideas. (And these are done in a different style with some textured “paper” under the drawings.) Add the elements of monsters and you have one comical character in a memorable story. Readers who like Diary of a Wimpy Kid or Big Nate will enjoy the illustration/text mash up and the comedic elements of this story. And when they laugh-out-loud they will wonder why there aren’t more in this series yet. Desmond is a fun school-kid who will be enjoyed and around for a monstrously long time. Well done, Tatulli. Well done....more

It is just that trouble seemsDelly is the type of girl that always tends to get into trouble. It isn’t because she is mean and wants to make trouble. It is just that trouble seems to find her. One day when Delly wakes up she feels that she is about to get a surpresent (a surprise that is a present). And it turns out the surpresent she gets is a new friend named Ferris Boyd. Ferris doesn’t talk and she doesn’t want anyone to touch her. But she is good at listening and she is good at basketball. Now Delly, her younger brother RB and another kid named Brud Kinney are going to try to figure out just what kind friend they need to be for Ferris Boyd.
This is a good book. There is so much in here, so much to talk about. It was perfect for our mother/daughter book club at the library. The reasons for Delly being so rambunctious, the reasons for Ferris Boyd being so stand-offish, the reasons that Brud Kinney decides to play basketball are all more than they seem at the surface. And Delly and all the rest have to figure out those reasons and then figure out what to do with what they find. Life is complicated. But life can be good if you have good people to be there for you. This book is one that stayed with me for days after I read it. Well done....more
