She had everything she could ever want, being a princess and all. However, she felt bored. But being a princess she had many friends. So she called them up. But Cinderella was cleaning, Rapunzel didn’t leave her tower, Sleeping Beauty was taking a nap, and Snow White was just plain busy. But Antonia couldn’t stand it. She was bored and she finally decided to do something about it. So she started running. She ran to Rapunzel’s tower and convinced Rapunzel to run with her. Then Cinderella joined them. And Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. Then some animals joined them (like the three billy goats gruff). Antonia loved the freedom she felt while she was running. Finally they all reached the sea and a lovely sunset. Then everyone turned around and went back to their homes with a fresh outlook on life. From then on out all the princesses were more apt to do things together, and they were never bored.
This is a fun twist on what it is like to be a fairy tale princess. In fact, I love the fact that Antonia takes charge of her life by doing something rather than actually just being bored. She didn’t wait for a fairy godmother or a prince to come and change her life–she did it. Also, I liked how just the act of running, exercising, made her feel better. Not stuff that she got or bought or friends or anything. It was doing something. And then all her friends decided to go along with her.
And then there are the illustrations. I love how it feels like a few textures and some colors were put together to make these pictures. Textures such as the bows on Antonia’s dress or what look like a photograph of Snow White’s dishes are combined with what look like lace doilies or brick walls for paths and castle towers. Then illustrations of the actual princesses faces or hair or trees are ever present as well. In fact, this whole set of illustrations are just one happy marriage of texture, drawing, and complementing colors (that go along with the pink and sparkly feel most young readers will love). Seriously, any little girl who loves pink and princesses will enjoy this story. And who knows, perhaps she will also learn to run or do things on her own to make her life a little less-boring. Mostly because when he tries to do various things nothing turns out as neat as what Unicorn is doing. For example, if Goat rides his bike to school (which he thought was “pretty cool”) Unicorn flies to school. When Goat wants to impress everyone with some magic tricks Unicorn goes around and starts turning everything to gold. Goat is frustrated and thinks that “Unicorn Thinks He’s Pretty Great.” So Goat decides to ignore him and eat a pizza with goat cheese on it. Unicorn comes over and can’t resist “that heavenly smell” of Goat’s pizza. Once the two animals start talking, Goat realizes that Unicorn’s life isn’t quite so perfect after all (Unicorn doesn’t have cloven hooves, isn’t good at playing soccer, etc.) So Goat starts to rethink his opinion of Unicorn…and perhaps they could be friends. Perhaps they could even team up. Or perhaps they can just play together and be friends.
This is a fun story about perceptions and friendship. But it is done in such a way that kids (especially those who like rainbows and sparkles) will love reading it over and over again. The illustrations are fun. The main bodies of each character are a shape of color and then extras like arms, legs, or hooves are all drawn with a black line. Then there are all the great rainbow colors that are all over the book (because Unicorn has a thing for always having loads of colors around). And I have to laugh that the other friends (the ones that Goat is sure like Unicorn better than him) are a cat, a dog, some sort of hamster-like animal, a piece of toast, and an apple or orange type of fruit. Which is just funny…especially when the toast is playing goalie at the soccer game. Seriously, even if parents aren’t into the colors and sparkles of a Unicorn, they will enjoy this book with all the subtle details that are just plain funny. Once again, I love what Bob Shea has created. And I am not surprised....more

But unlike most princesses she had a few hobbies that made her a bit different. She liked to karate chop, dive into the moat, and skateboard. The King, Queen, and rest of the kingdom was worried that she did not act like a princess should. So when an invitation to go to Camp Princess to learn how to be a regular princess came, she jumped at the chance to go.
Alas, at Camp Princess she just didn’t seem to fit in. She couldn’t be herself and be a “normal” princess at the same time. When the Royal Bash is crashed by a dragon, it is Princess Viola Louise Hassenfeffer who comes to the rescue by being herself. And then all the other princesses want to learn how to be just like her. And Viola figured out that she can be the “darling of the kingdom” by being herself.
I like this book. A lot. I especially like how even though pink is a major color, and princesses are a major theme, it shows that you don’t have to be all pink, all princess, and all perfect to be the best princesses ever. I like how Viola doesn’t have to have her hair up. She can defend herself and her friends without waiting for a knight. And she can do it all while wearing bracelets and a tiara. I also like how the illustrations give a nod or two to comic book-style panels when princess Viola is especially being herself. After all, nothing says happy action like a few comic-panels. And the nod to other princesses is quite humorous for the adults. (I noticed some Princess Leia buns and a Snow White inspired gown just to name a few.) This is one book that allows the princess lovers to realize that there is often more to being a princess than just the sparkles and the waving. I love it!...more
