While she is there she enjoys watching all the performances and seeing all the animals. On one particular day she notices that some penguins were back stage during a dance performance. And they waddled off with some of the dancing props (boas, hats, fans, bows, etc.). But when Julie went to the penguin area to see what the penguins were up to, they just acted like frozen ice cubes. Later, when she spied on them she discovered that they were dancing. She tried to dance with them…but they wouldn’t have it. She even got the hippo to dress up like a penguin to be her dance partner, but that still didn’t work. Finally Julie went into the penguin cove and started to cha-cha (a dance the penguins didn’t know from going to the show). The penguins couldn’t help it. They wanted to learn the new dance and started dancing with Julie. From then on, Julie became somewhat of an honorary penguin who would dance with her tuxedo-looking buddies. Although at the next show Julie did notice that some monkeys were especially interested in the Magician’s props…(less)

Of course life is very different near New York City compared to home. There are loads of issues that Sara deals with or sees others struggle over: being away from home, communication, becoming sexually active, being used by the person she loves, eating disorders, making and keeping friends, hard curriculum in a new private school, being a teenager with parents who can’t read her mind, etc. And it is all in poetry.
So I liked the poetry. But I didn’t love this story. I didn’t like how Sara just did what Rem wanted to make her feel better about herself. It was like she kept doing all these destructive things and couldn’t stop. Now I know that many teenagers don’t think through all their actions…but this teenager just drove me nuts. Now, I do know that my personality doesn’t mean that this isn’t an amazing book for many other people. But since I had to force myself to care about the main character and that parts of it were too crude…it just wasn’t for me. Meh.(less)

But there are a few mishaps on her way to fulfulling her dreams. She must learn to not bring her pets (a cat and a bat), not trip on her cape, and not turn into a bat when things get tricky. But with a few good suggestions she learns how to keep working toward her dream so that she can dance as well as anyone.
Honestly, the story is fun--but the pictures are what make this book! The Vampirina Ballerina is so adorable (I love the pink and black and the sparkles). And there are so many funny moments that you wouldn't get from the text. For example at one point everyone is looking in the mirror at the ballet studio and everyone has a reflection except for our young ballerina. Or when she is practicing around the haunted mansion each scene is hillarious (and the writing on the toombstones is a nice touch).
If there are little girls who love monsters, dancing, ballet, or all things pink and sparkly...this will be a fun book for them to check out of the library...or own! And since there are as many jokes for the parents as bits of the story for the little one, adults will want to read this again and again along with their kiddo. Well done!(less)

I love how each of the animals that have the beat use their particular animal sounds or sounds that animals would realistically make to show the beat. The chicks all "peep," the cat gives a "puuurrrr! mee-ooow!" and sheep give a "tat! tat! tattity-tat-tat!" The beautiful illustrations are by Marc Brown. They are fantastic! I love looking at all the textures and expressions on all of the animals. And the end is such fun. This is one that begs to be read aloud over and over again.(less)
