It may not be the best book in the world, but it's cute and sweet, which was exactly the kind of book I was looking for at the time. I also appreciated Kiera Cass' ability to do foreshadowing and lay out the plot for a future conflict with the rebels while writing about a contest for Prince Maxon's heart. Sure it may also be a pretty simple book, but unless you just hate a good, cute romance and you can't play pretend for the future, you'll like this book. A lot of people have complained about it being stupid, not having a lot of depth, and being to much like 'The Bachelor.' Now look at it this way: This is just the first book in the trilogy. It's the book that has to lay it all out, and since Cass took on the challenge of writing about a different futuristic world, there's a lot to explain. If you take the general plot line of a book and apply it to a trilogy, you can see how this book falls in the development section- the exposition and rising action. You have to be patient. It's true it's kind of like 'The Bachelor,' but you also have to keep in mind that you can really sense that there's going to be some deeper stuff in the future novels as the rebels begin to play a higher role. Cass is setting everything up- this contest is part of that, too. It's why America, a five, would out of all people be at the castle and start learning more about the attacks to Illea. If you have some intellect, you can tell that the plot is going to be more complicated than just a contest to become the princess of Illea. It's not that shallow and simple.
If I could, I'd give this book a 4.3ish rating.
Also, I must say that I really do want America and Maxon to end up together. Just saying. (And I want Celeste to suffer. Mean and harsh, but true.)
I'm anxiously waiting for the next installment, which I have hopes will have more complex plot lines and will address the attacks Illea has faced more in depth....more

I read it all through the night and part of the day, and when I was finished, I immediately went to his website and downloaded all of his books into my Kindle. I'm not usually into this genre- I'm more of a fiction, fantasy, romance reading person- but I was sucked into this book starting from the introduction. I definitely recommend this book to everybody- even if you're not into this genre. I think I'm addicted now....more
