Gilly Hopkins is a foster child and she has been on her own for so long, she's forgotten what love looks like. She's tough and always ready to scrap, but she spends so much time pushing others away, when love finally does sneak up on her, she's completely blindsided. This story doesn't have a terrific ending, but it's definitely one worth reading.

It's uplifting because it is a true testament to the human spirit, and it's sad, because the author has to say good-bye to someone he obviously loves very much. It's sad that Mitch loses his teacher, but it's amazing that Mitch reenters Morrie's life just when they seem to need each other the most.
Mitch reunites with his college professor from 20 years ago during the last few month's of Morrie's life. Tuesdays with Morrieis Mitch's testament to Morrie's life, and the valuable lessons that he learned with Morrie every Tuesday afternoon. These Tuesday afternoon lessons started while Mitch was in university, and despite a 20 year absence from one another, when Mitch discovers that Morrie is dying from ALS, he decides to reunite with his beloved teacher. They resume their lessons, only this time, Morrie and Mitch talk about the meaning of life. Morrie may be suffering from a brutal disease that will rob him of all his dignity and eventually take his last breaths away, but he doesn't let his illness get him down. He lives his life with joy and love, and accepts his fate in life with grace. Mitch, on the other hand, learns that he has simply been moving through life from day to day. He hasn't really been living his life to the fullest.
Although this isn't the type of book that I would normally read, I'm awarding it five stars because it delivers an important message that everyone should read. Make every day in your life count. Live it with joy and abandon, and never lose out on an opportunity to spend your days with the ones you love.
