That whole scenario made me laugh and laugh . . . but thanks to this book, my 8yo spent the morning making a cardboard Pac-Man game and trying to get the 4yo to put the coins from her piggy bank in it and "play." We had to have a little heart-to-heart about how Greg is actually doing some pretty mean things in these books. (less)

His main interest seems to be any time someone is depicted in the shower or in their underwear, or the little brother potty-training. And there is a lot of that. Sigh.(less)

A lot of the results of Greg's adventures are things that an adult can see coming, but kids probably won't understand why he failed. Still can't put them down, and neither can my 8 year old.(less)

The Birnbaum's guides are the best for anything Disney-related. All their writers clearly love the Disney parks and cruises; they are enthusiastic about the food, the activities, and just about everything else. It's not only refreshing (I will never again buy an "Unofficial Guide" thanks to their anti-Disney attitude. Memo to them: hire some writers who actually like Disneyland!), but they get you really excited for your trip. The cruise guide is small, and has a lot to cover, but it gives you a brief rundown of each shore excursion, as well as in depth descriptions of the ships and what amenities and activities to expect on board. There is some good practical advice about transportation, what to pack (and not pack), what's included in the initial price and what isn't. All around, a great prep for a cruise! (less)

My sister loved Dune (book and movie, and still does) , but I was too young to read the book or see the movie when it first came out. But my mom got this from the library, and I devoured it. I was obsessed with the pictures, I had a crush on Kyle MacLachlan, I was totally into the culture of Arrakis. I think I was about 9 or 10 at the time. This lead me to seeing the movie when I was 11, and reading the actual book when I was barely 12. Changed my life. Years later my husband found me a copy of this at Powell's in Portland, and I was delighted to find that it had been written by Joan Vinge, whose Cat books (PSION, CATSPAW) had been my favorites as a teen!(less)

Simple drawing paired with a simple narrative combine to tell the story of an average kid. He likes video games, thinks his parents are goofy, and desperately wants to be popular. Some of his observations about middle school, like how some kids are still tiny and some are big hairy gorillas, are so hilariously astute. Also, you have to marvel at how unapologetically awful this kid is. He's a total jerk to his friend most of the time, and is always being mean to his little brother. I have to admit: I laughed and laughed!(less)

Hard to say, but DELIGHTFUL to read! I read this book in one day, I simply could not put it down. Narrated by 14 year old Bee, who is trying to figure out where her fabulous, high strung mother has disappeared to, the reader is caught up in the emails, letters, notes, video and audio transcripts that lead up to Bernadette's sudden, bizarre disappearance. At times I was laughing out loud, at other times I felt almost uncomfortable as Bernadette's rants and depression reminded me too much of some of my own issues . . . but there's a bright, shining wonder to this book, particularly at the end.
This book is one being recommended to teens, and I second that. There's some language, and some mild sexuality, but teens over 16 would enjoy it.(less)
