This book answers that question - there is a chance that people will unite against epics.
The Reckoners are famous now and David is known as Steelslayer. Newcago now has a government and things are slowly getting better, though people still are afraid of epics and keep expecting some other epic to take over the city. ...more

These epics can control elements, fly, kill with just their fingers, shoot energy bolts with their hands, create earth quakes, create illusions etc. and they are all evil.
The world that emerge from this is a chaotic and dangerous place. The more powerful epics are like forces of nature and cannot be stopped. The governments are powerless and they collapse. The Epics battle each other for domination of cites and to rule of human beings. Ordinary people have no choice in this matter other than to try and survive the best they can.
The protagonist, David, was eight years old when his father was killed at the hands of a very powerful epic called Steelheart. Since then he has dedicated his life in studying everything about epics so that he can one day kill Steelheart and take revenge.
David is not alone in his quest to fight and kill epics. A group of ordinary people called the Reckoners operate from the shadows and kill the epics. Killing an epic is not easy but all the epics have some weakness, it may be some colour, a metal, smoke, light etc. The Reckoners study the epics and kill them. After David joins the Reckoners, they decide to go after the most powerful epic - Steelheart.
———— I found this book to be page turner.
There is this question about Calamity - where did it come from, is it alien, is it a comet, or is it a military experiment gone wrong? Why are all epics evil? Where do their powers come from?
Hopefully these questions will be answered in the next book in the series. ...more

Act 1 of the book was absolutely disgusting where the sole aim of the protagonist was getting in his half girlfriend's pants.
Act 2 of the book redeemed itself a bit where the protagonist throws away the big city job so that he can help his mom and the people of his village.
Act 3 -- well, there is a good twist and off to a dramatic happy ending.
Bit of spoilers ..
It's not much of a novel but it'll be a damn good script for a sappy romantic Bollywood flick. The poor guy from Bihar meets a hot rich girl from Delhi at a prestigious school where they play basketball. Throw some drama and conflict in between. Enter - Rich, suave Indian guy from London (antagonist) ... more drama ... protagonist loses the girl... they meet again... more drama... lose again... the intensity of drama increases to a exploding climax and happy ending. ...more

Once in the host, the replicate at an exponential rate and change the human biology and these things spread like zombie bite and they are let loose in New York city.
Now, add in a bunch of unlikely hero - Eph and Nora from Centre for Disease Control, professor Abraham who has a first hand experience of the epidemic and Fet - the rat exterminator. These guys group up the contain the spread of virus and exterminate it.
The stakes are high as the virus is spreading at an alarming rate and there are powerful forces working against our unlikely bunch of heroes.
I got to know about this book from the show - The Strain on FX. The Strain is the first book of the The Strain trilogy. Till now the story is humans working to contain the vampire epidemic, the next book in the trilogy - The Fall is going to introduce other ancient vampires into the mix, which I hope doesn't muddle things up.
The strain is one of the best, grounded story which adds a new twist to the vampire lore....more
