HNow, this book has been compared to so many books...Harry Potter, Narnia, and one of my favorite books of all time, A Secret History by Donna Tartt. How does A Secret History get mixed in with these other fantasy based books? Quite easily, actually. I really did have an open mind when starting this book, I did not want to be quick to judge..however, when I began reading it I thought, oh no, it's Harry Potter with thrown in swear words for good measure. That feeling quickly passed as the story engaged me. I grew up reading fantasty/sci-fi novels and the story of "The Magician" really brought me back to that feeling of entering another world...but in a clinical-dry fantasy/sci-fi way that I really love. It blasts Narnia and Potter in little ways but also bows down and gives them nods of thanks. This story is NOT schmaltzy and I dig that. If you like schmaltzy and feel good stories about good trumping evil, you won't get that here. I have read reviews here that state that you don't really care about the characters...that the story line moves along at such a fast pace (the school years go by chapter by chapter.)that you aren't given TIME to care. I disagree. I cared for every single character (I love LOVE Josh and Eliot), good and not so good. Reviewers have said that Quentin is self-absorbed and so very unhappy. I think he is a young person and I think almost every person is like that when comtemplating their future. That's what you get in a coming of age story. Me personally? I didn't always see the unhappiness in Quentin. He was quite happy at times.
Althought I'm not going to go into the specific storyline-(there are other reviews that cover that)-I would like to mention my favorite parts. I really dug the idea of "The Beast" and when "The Beast" shows itself for the first time...omigosh, that is just excellent. What is HAPPENING? I love that oddness. That time froze and this creature/person was moving around...almost like an imp. So friggin' scary.
I loved the off-handed way of saying that a student got eaten. LOVE that..see? No schmaltz!
I also loved the Paramedic and the whole idea of trying to find the school and Hedge Witches. I'd SOOOOOOooo be a Hedge Witch, trying to find my way in...knowing that I was born to do magic.
I dug the writing, especially a few of Josh's lines. One of my favorites - "“Are you kidding? That guy was a mystery wrapped in an enigma and crudely stapled to a ticking f*cking time bomb. He was either going to hit somebody or start a blog. To tell you the truth I’m kind of glad he hit you.” heehee. Josh has all the good lines, I tell ya.
I loved the Centaur Retreat and their way of mending skin. (I don't want to give away too much)
And once again, I speak of "The Beast" Love.
I do love how it, in a way, parallels A Secret History. You have the narrator, you have almost all of the characters represented, even Bunny. You also have Q, the guy who feels like an outsider in this crowd sometimes. You also have the alcohol, smoking, drugs and sex that made A Secret History so rich and powerful. What you DIDN'T have from The Secret History was the richness of description. Ms. Tartt made me smell the Autumn...she made me taste the bourbon. I didn't get that with The Magician. I think it would have been a richer reading experience with a bit more description.
What I didn't like about the book was the ending. The aftermath of their epic adventure is brutal and Q is trying to make peace with his life...realizing that what they did wasn't the smart nor fun adventure he thought it would be. He is mourning and sad. Then...what does he do? He goes against everything that he just mulled over for the past chapter. Again, I know...it is youth but it just made the last part of the story feel like a complete waste. (but again, maybe that's the point) As Q would say, the thick plottens.
