I have been crocheting since childhood and I enjoy doing laces and threadwork. These designs suit my wardrobe and I look forward to having the time to sit down with my hooks and some fresh yarn and make something for warmer weather.
The inspirational tips that are scattered through the text are not crochet-related. They are of a rather general nature and the exercise might have been more successful if the author had offered inspirational tips that were more closely related to the creative process, acquiring a new skill or something of that nature. ...more

Shaping depends on such things as tucks, gathers and bias and not so much on seaming. As interesting as this book is, there are several problems. One thing is the designer's reliance on bias tape for all raw edges. I shudder at the prospect of fiddling with all of that bias tape. Some edges can be narrow-hemmed but most of the patterns do not lend themselves to that treatment. Another problem is that most of the patterns require 60" wide fabric and dress-weight fabrics that width are not that common in the few remaining home-sewing fabric stores in my vicinity. In order to sew most the designs in this book, I will have to order from online sources. Another problem with this book is the garment sizing. There are cutting lines for small, medium and large but there is no indication as to what these sizes mean in actual body measurements. Furthermore, there are no measurements given for the finished garments at the key points, making it danged difficult to know where to start. ...more

If I hadI bought this because the photography was charming and I was in one of those I-feel-deprived-so-I'm-gonna-buy-myself-a-present kind of moods. If I had thought about it for another three seconds, I would never have purchased the book. The main reason is that this is one of those books that have small-scale drawings of pattern pieces in the back and tell you to take them to a copy center to enlarge them by some percentage. I would must prefer it if such books provided the scale and dimensions of the pieces and let the user have the option of graphing out the pieces, at home. If I'm in the mood to make something, I don't really feel inclined to schlep to a copy center and spend even more money....more

I purchased this one because I was interested in her designs and I had read some positive reviews of the book. I have not made up any of the patterns, however, because the seam allowances are not consistent and I have not felt like wasting my time figuring out what the designer had in mind. Here's the problem: the text says that a smaller seam allowance has been included for certain pieces and that this information will be found on the actual pattern pieces. I have been unable to find such information in the edition that I purchased. Like I said, I don't feel like wasting my time, trying to figure out if a particular pattern piece might be considered samll enough (by some other person's standards) to require a 1/4" seam allowance. I would have preferred that the seam allowances for all pieces were the same or if there were no seam allowances provided and that decision had been left up to the homesewer. As it is, I feel that I am expected to guess....more
