When this popped up on a book deal list, I had just been looking for a good triad romance. I figured it was fate -- a novella fitting that theme, and it's free!
Sadly, I was very disappointed in Summer Wine. I didn't connect with the characters at all. On top of that, everything seemed very flat and rushed, and the sex was not very sexy; really, it reminded me of a low-rate porno. Not because of the content -- I love extremely spicy erotica! But rather due to the lack of character development, lack of believable emotions, and overall writing style, etc.
Oh, and there's a big ol' dollop of insta-love going on in here. Really. One night as a threesome and these three are COMPLETELY CONVINCED that they are all in love with one another and can make it as a triad. No, just no. I'm sorry, even if I'm reading for escape or fantasy, I refuse to believe that.
And the editing . . . yeah, I won't go there.
I'm sure there will be some that enjoy this novella, and it is free. But for me, there are just so many other great books in this genre, and I'm slightly sorry that I wasted an hour of my time reading this one. ...more

I admit, I'm a bit disappointed. Escorted has such a unique set up. However, for me, it didn't work as well as it did for others. I felt like Kent could have expanded on it more, there was just so much potential, but for me it fell flat.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but there was far too much sex. Or rather far too much clinical, boring sex. And it was repetitive. I can't count how many times some of the same phrases were used, how many times he rolled off the bed and went to the bathroom for “longer than usual” to dispose of the condom. Or how many times he “jerked his head to the side” as he came. Oh, and it's apparently an infectious act; soon there were a few sex scenes were they BOTH jerked their heads to the side as they came. I'm not even sure what that means. In my head, I pictured some poor guy twitching and I wondered if I should ask about his medical history; does he have seizures, for example? Perhaps the author thought such an action was sexy. I just found it annoying and odd. In general, there was just too many things repeated again and again. I think if I was to highlight all of the repeated phrases/scenes, there would only be a handful of pages left in the entire book!
And as much as I love a lot of (good!) sex in my books, here it was far too much. Was there a story or character development in this book? I'm not sure, to be honest. If there was, it was clearly hidden too deep in all the sex scenes. I'm not joking: every chapter began with Lori waiting for Anders in the hotel room. Stilted conversation would follow, then sex (complete with jerking heads), and then perhaps a few lines of fairly decent conversation. End of chapter, then repeat. It was a bit exhausting, and it truly did make it difficult for me to see any character development or story progression between all the sex.
I would have liked to see some of the story from Ander's POV. And I wish Lori had been better fleshed out. Even though she's supposed to be this bestselling romance author, I felt like the only thing I really *knew* about her was that she loved having sex with Ander. There was no scenes with her working, and she only interacts briefly with her friend. Otherwise it's all about the sex. I wanted more from the story than that.
All that being said, I did like the book, but I wasn't in love with it. I don't regret reading it, of course, but I'm not sure I'll be doing a reread at any time. Unless it's to highlight just how many times Anders jerks his head. :)
If this book worked for you – great, I'm happy and I want to know why! For me, it simply fell flat. ...more

I'm definitely not the audience for this type of romance; even by the end of the novella, I was a bit unsure about the hero and heroine technically being stepsiblings (though her mother left his dad very shortly after the marriage, and the stepdad continued to take care of her).
Still, I may try another book in this series when I need something quick and dirty to read. ...more

It's no secret -- I love Jessica Scott's Coming Home Series. No other author, in this genre, writes with such gut-wrenching, believable emotional. Every story, no matter if it's a novella or full length novel, brings me to the brink of tears at least a half dozen times -- and All I Want for Christmas Is You was not different!
I'm not sure what more I can say. If you haven't read Scott yet, I can only tell you, once again, that you are missing out. And if you're already a fan? Well, then you know just how amazing her books are. :)...more

Mostly, I simply couldn't connect with the Gabriel or Arthur; by the end of the book, I didn't feel like I truly *knew* either character enough to care about them. Their story was enjoyable enough to read, and there were more than a few "awe, how sweet!" moments, but nothing that wowed me.
Also, I had an issue with the switch in POV throughout the story -- and I'm not sure if it was the author or the editing. I'm okay with switching POVs, but in this case it left me lost and gave me a bit of a headache. One paragraph would be from Gabriel's POV while he's in the library. Then the very next paragraph would be from Arthur's POV . . . while he's across town. It wasn't like switching POV with characters within the same room, or switching POV but dividing the section up into another chapter or separating the POVs with a ~~~~ or something. Nope, this was a jump from one to the next and this bothered me, pulled me out the story as I tried to adjust to which man's head I was in from one paragraph to the next.
As I said, this was a sweet holiday m/m romance, with a bit of spice and light BDSM play. It was a quick enough read, but not a favorite by any means. I will still try another one of Cullinan's books in the future, as I have heard good things about her novels. But for me, Sleigh Ride was just "okay'....more
