The story opens with Cassia, the protagonist, who, like other members of the Society who have reached their 17th birthday, is attending the Matching Ceremony to be matched with her perfect life partner. This match has been carefully considered and orchestrated by the Society based on a variety of data collected for years on each member of Society. This system of matching allows for compatibility and a perfect gene pool that ensures all citizens will lead a highly productive and healthy life until they reach their 80th birthday, at which time death occurs. However, her match turns out to have more than one element of curiosity that begins Cassia's eye-opening journey that reveals the chinks in the armor of the Society in which she lives.(less)
