I was blissfully; and very surprisingly, unaware of the theme of this book when I bought it. To be honest it was another one of those "I feel so out of touch with the book world" moments when I figured it out. It was the synopsis that hooked me into buying it in the first place, but I think that; along with the title, served to possibly miss out on a target, cult audience – and definitely why it sat on my shelf for as long as it did before I decided to crack it open. By now though, the cat's pretty much out of the bag... This is a zombie novel. But if that's not your thing, don't leave just yet, this is a zombie novel unlike any other I have read before – and I have read MORE than my fair share! Zombie novels are kinda my thing, so this was a very pleasant surprise.
Centering on an oddity of preciousness; Melanie, in the aftermath of a biological holocaust that has turned it's victims into "hungries", it is a beautifully written tale of self discovery. Carey does exceptional job humanizing what are traditionally rotting, remorseless monsters. In a world saturated with the undead; this is a perfect side step from the end of the world as we know it norm.
I would highly recommend The Girl With All the Gifts to ANY sci-fi, horror, dystopian, or thriller reader. ...more
