EsHaving been spoiled by Octavia Butler and Tananarive Due, I get a little skeptical when choosing to read new supernatural or science fiction books. Especially when they are also part of the romance genre. The recently passed authors L.A. Banks and Monica Jackson were masters at this subject. Because I've read most of A.C. Arthur's romances, I was interested to see what she had in store with Temptation Rising and I was not disappointed.
Kalina Harper is a police officer in Washington, DC who is dedicated to her job and mostly keeps to herself. She is plagued by dreams of the attack on her two years ago by a low level drug dealer. Someone (or something) came to her aid and pulled the man off of her. Kalina didn't get a good look at the man who saved her, but she can't shake the feeling of the presence of a beast as well. And were they one and the same.
Now Kalina has been assigned an undercover position as an accountant at the law firm of Reynolds & Delgado to determine if they are linked to a South American drug organization. Her new boss, Roman Reynolds, is a great lawyer, but he is also a shapeshifting jaguar who will finally answer the questions of what happened to her that night.
This first entry into the Shadow Shifters series was quite interesting and enjoyable. In addition to witnessing the growing attraction between Kalina and Roman (very steamy), we are also shown the history of the Shifters and the infighting that is threatening their existence. It's standard in stories like this to show the power struggles that happen when humans are given special powers. There is always a faction that wants to use it to help the world and another that wants to rule it. I look forward to seeing how this plays out in the forthcoming books in the series....more

The Returned is not that. Instead it's a quiet, yet complex story about love, faith, and fear. Harold and Lucille Hargrave's son Jacob died at the age of 8 in 1966. Now, over 40 years later, he is brought home to them by a government agent who is as perplexed as they are but is just doing his job. It seems that this is happening all over the world and no one knows why. Are they living or dead? Are they back for good? What do we do with them? If you're looking for an action packed zombie novel like The Walking Dead, this is not for you. If you're interested in a story of ordinary people forced to deal with an extraordinary situation, then pick this up. The American television series based on this book, Resurrection will start in March 2014....more

Eager to step out of her “good girl” role, she lets her way more outgoing roommate convince her to come out to a party instead of holed up in the dorm room studying like she normally does. Of course, by the time she realizes that this was a huge mistake, she’s being cornered by a drunk guy who won’t take no for an answer and then a fight breaks out.
Aiden Sanchez is also using college to escape his life as a Shifter and the responsibilities that come with it. He has managed to separate himself and live a drama free existence, until while grabbing a drink a bar his natural instincts surface and he winds up saving Grace from the drunk’s unwanted advances.
Mine to Claim is only about 93 pages long, but it does a great job of setting up the romance between Aiden and Grace and what they must face because of it. In the main Shadow Shifters series, the men tend to readily accept their roles and it was refreshing to read about someone who was reluctant to be a part of it....more

Although it was an amazing kiss, Lidia knows that being with Brayden romantically could take away her chance at the normal life she desires. Her fear of becoming a rogue Shifter, like her uncle, and betraying her tribe fuels her plan to nip this attraction in the bud.
However, there’s danger nearby as the rogues are getting stronger and fighting it just may bring them together and reconcile Lidia’s feelings about her Shifter role. I believe this is the first time that a male Shifter didn’t put up a fight when he discovered who his companheiro, or life mate, was. Brayden made peace with it and worked hard to convince Lidia of it....more

Never feeling likeCaleb Ramsey grew up with the Sanchez family after his parents were murdered, training to take his place in the Shifter community. Never feeling like he quite belonged, he leaves at 19 to find his own way. He gets a job, an apartment and relishes the “normal” life he has created for himself. He eats dinner at the same bar every night hoping to see a waitress that has caught his eye.
Zoe Fallon, the waitress, has been abused for most of her life. With no one to save her, she lost herself in romance books to escape the trauma surrounding her. This causes her to over romanticize men sometimes in a way than can be dangerous. After witness her current boyfriend touching her a bit roughly in the bar, Caleb’s natural protective instinctive as a Shifter kicks in.
Zoe’s naiveté about her boyfriend was annoying at times, but I understand it was needed to move the story along. Her desire for a hero was exactly what forced Caleb to accept who and what he was.
These novellas were the perfect placeholders to help us wait for the next full Shadow Shifters novel coming up....more

As half humans and half cats, they work hard to shield themselves from the general public and keep them safe from a rogue delegation of Shifters who want to use their powers to dominate and take over the world. I am a huge fan of this series as each one tells a hot love story while also advancing the overall story of the Shifters. Ezra Preston and Jewel Jenner have both been mentioned in earlier books: Ezra as a bodyguard to the head of the Shifters and Jewel as a secretary to one of regional leaders. When Ezra goes on an undercover assignment to New Mexico to get more information about the Rogues plans, he also discovers that Jewel has secrets, too, that may impact the Shifters and their future as well. As always, Arthur keeps putting out interesting tales in this series and I can’t wait for the story of Eli, Ezra’s twin....more
