A very cute picture that is a softcover making it easy to handle. The illustrations are bright, cheery and original.
The main character is a dog who eats some magic beans and suddenly is wearing a cape and a superhero outfit. The dog's superhero skill? Well, that would be licking of course. The dog saves the day when kids are upset and goes looking for people to help. It is very sweet doggy tale. Fun to read!(less)

We read the first chapter together last night and after awhile I had to tell her to turn out her light as she was still reading. This morning, back to the book and already half way through.
The idea of a family that wonders why Mathilda would want to read books when they have a perfectly good telly (TV) is amusing. Dahl has a way with spinning the world that tickles the imagination of kids.(less)

Of course, since then I have purchased many copies to share the Walter love.
Basically, this is the tale of a dog brought home from the pound who has a bit of an odour issue. It doesn't matter what the family feeds him, he can't stop producing gas. When the parents decide at long last that the dog needs to go... he saves the day in a gas-powered way.(less)

The story is about a little girl who is finally allowed to go out somewhere on her own. But it is not without it's challenges. Set in the segregated south, this character is a coloured gal on her way to "someplace special." As she meets each challenge with her head held high, she comes to the special place she seeks--a place where everyone is welcome. The public library.(less)

I'm not one for Sesame Street, but this book was funny. Kids will get a kick out of Grover talking 'to them' and asking them not to turn the page as there is a(nother) monster at the end of the book. The author, Melanie, is attempting to write a nice story about a mouse. However, Chester--the cat, has very different ideas on this. He keeps interrupting with his red marker. And so the story takes a turn and a battle ensues between the two. Kids may not quite understand it at first, but once they do, they'll be 'Chester'ing things all over the house if they happen across a red marker. If your kids liked "There's a Monster at the End of This Book" with Grover, they'll love Chester.(less)

That doesn't seem to slow them down though. Squish is a kid, er, amoeba that anyone can understand. Aimed at about 7-year-olds, these books are sort of the beginning of Nancy Drew and how she became a mystery solver. Set at a sleepover, one of the girl's coveted dolls goes missing. Junie B. Jones is a girl who speaks her mind. Written as if narrated by a 5-year-old, the words and fears hit home with similar aged little ones.
Junie B. Jones' class is planning a field trip to the local farm, but Junie B. Jones is afraid of ponies. She is talked out of that fear and right into a new one--roosters! What will Junie do on field trip day? Will she fake sick? Hide on the bus? Befriend the farmer for protection? Or possibly all of the above.(less)
