A busy, fast-paced career mom has a car accident and receives a brain injury and loses all sense of "left." Where is her left arm? Is it there? The left side of her plate? The left side of the room? Where did my husband go? Left.
A fascinating look at the issue of "left neglect" and how it can change a life.
A fun read that is easy to identify with. How could that be, right? Well, it is.

It was more a story of how she came to be his wife. I think book 2 will deal with how she shapes the empire. Oh well. It was a good read with great historical details. Was a tad slow in some places, but overall was good.(less)

I would recommend future readers to read this within a few weeks of starting. I ended up reading this one over about a month and I started to forget details that would have made it a much richer read. There were lots of little connections which were great. The characters were good and the setting was its own little character as well.(less)

It is a sweet, kind, and gentle sort of a book that probes deep philosophical questions. While almost a romance in parts, it is also quite cerebral and heady in others.
Basically, a scientist (Canadian!) in her thirties or forties decodes a message sent from an alien planet. By the time they have sent their reply and the answer has come back through the 18.8 lightyears that are between the two planets, she is in her 80s and nearing the end of her life. But the message is for her. Enter the rollback. Her and her husband are given a renewing series of operations that turns back the clock so it is exactly like they are in their 20s again. Only it doesn't work on her--just her husband. And so it begins. A new message to decode. Youth. Age. Life. Death. (less)

A memoir of how she kept her spirits up, connected with her captors, and subsisted on juice and cookies for a month. No showers. A dusty hole the size of most washrooms.
My husband really enjoyed the aspect of how Fung connected with her captors and understood why they were doing what they were. Personally, I wanted more 'on the back end.' In other words, after her release the book ended. I was curious about how she felt back home. Whether she really did form that cavity. How her reunion was with her boyfriend, etc. (less)

Anyway, my husband was reading it and shared it with me--sorry, Bill, we didn't buy the audiobook, just one copy of the ebook--not even hardcover!!--and shared it.
Shatner is funny, ahead of his time, and real. Oh, and Canadian. :) While he plays the egotistical TV star from time to time, he does so in a way that is very funny. We are laughing 'with' not 'at.'
These are his rules for living, one of which is "Yes." If you always say yes then opportunity can knock. It's something my husband is trying right now--it's a little rule that hit him at a good time in his life. So, say "yes" to Shatner Rules and see what opens up in your life. If nothing, at least a few laughs. :)(less)

Martin is a 'normal' dude desperate for work and ends up working for some very strange folks. Still reeling from his lack of interview he discovers that these strange folks aren't exactly 'normal' humans. And maybe not even human. And that his job as public relations manager might involve some very fast thinking, a few tales, and suspending all sorts of disbelief.
Quickly pulled into an adventure that opens his eyes to the underworld--quite literally--he has what one would consider a helluva a first day at work.
My understanding is that this is a prequel to one of Conteur's novels.

Kate Reddy is a woman who can't seem to say no and doesn't seem to have the ability to say 'no.' (Spoiler alert) At least not until the end of the book where she suddenly quits it all but then jumps into something new. The quitting it all didn't feel quite right to me because of the way she was sooo against it in the beginning. Sometimes I think there is that balance between working at a killer job and not working at all. And I suppose that is what the character found in the end--so I should stop complaining. :)(less)

Later note: This book, while dealing in some stereotypes of the people and culture of Finland--of course, was quite dead on. It actually explains quite a bit about my mom who's grandparents were from Finland and grew up in a Finnish community. It also, strangely enough, explains a bit about me too! The writing is funny, brief, easy to read, and informative. I actually want to read the Canadian version now, just to see what it says about Canadians. A great resource for writers who want to hone in on culture or the traveller, or the business person, or someone looking for an interesting read.(less)

She's a feisty little Victorian who loves science and tinkering with steam powered contraptions. In an era of keeping women in their place and following the social norms of the time, she flaunts conventions with a style, flair, and energy that will have you rooting for her.
Phoebe creates an elixir that puts her and her tinkerer lover in the sights of the other side of London's steampunk world's revolution. Will she and her man survive or will they have to give up the one thing they've finally realized is the only thing they want?
...And I'm not telling because that would be a spoiler. Read it yourself! (It's on Smashwords for free! Wahoo!)(less)

Well, he should have the story of himself--Life of Pi--along with him because it does exactly that.
While some of the beginning of this book was a bit slow, the story was great and unique and allowed the read to get completely caught up in it. As well, our book club discussion made this one even better. The more we discussed it, the more we all got out of it. As well, there were so many different ways to interpret events, so many questions raised... great for starting discussions. Highly recommended for book clubs.(less)

Truly, it teaches you enough psychology that you can interpret what you come across while 'snooping' and trying to figure someone out. You learn to pick up clues to 'behaviour reside' which people naturally make and tells us about that person in the grand psychology/personality scheme of things. It also teaches the reader how to distinguish between real clues and ones that might be intentionally set out to create a certain impression (you know, like that thick book you leave on the coffee table that will surely make you look smart to those who happen to see it there). It's a pretty cool idea--figuring out more about people you know. But if you are looking for an easy, hand-it-to-you guide to thumb through when snooping through someone's room, you're going to have to use your brain. :)(less)

I really enjoyed this one. It's one of those books that allows to you to slow down and savour a good read. So few books allow that these days. I found myself fully wrapped up in the lives of the characters. At times I'd come to the end of a chapter and want to put the book down to go do something else and there'd be this incredible cliffhanger. More than once my husband heard me proclaim something to the effect, "AGH! The chapter just ended with the father tossed in jail and the mother poisoned. How the heck am I supposed to put it down now???"
A well thought out book. Real characters. A story that spans a perfect amount of time--time used to make everything more real as the 'life issues' of the characters aren't something that will be solved lickety-split.(less)

Includes a questionnaire at the end in case you weren't able to figure out who you were in the body of the book. What I liked about reading this book was that I instantly understood someone I know and why it is so difficult to buy that person gifts--that is not how they perceive love. At all. Suddenly I had a great inspiration for gift giving--don't give a gift, give time together (a love language). Yep, this book can make you a show-your-love rockstar. ;)(less)
