Crenshaw is a big, hairy cat who shows up when Jackson is feeling anxious and scared, but doesn't want to show those emotions to the world.
Jackson has lived through homelessness before when he was in 1st grade and his mom lost her job as a school music teacher and his dad was diagnosed with MS. Slowly, surely the family gathered up their strength and found a way out of their sad predicament. They moved into a cozy little apartment, and even though it was nothing like the house they used to live in with the big backyard, it was safe and Jackson felt secure.
Now, while Jackson is in 5th grade and he's found a great friend in Marisol, desperate financial times have struck the family and homelessness is looming once again. Crenshaw reappears and nudges Jackson to face his fears and tell the truth...even while the adults in his life are hedging around the facts and not coming clean about their dire situation. But, as we all know, kids understand more than we think they do, and Jackson knows what's going on. He's tired of the lack of food, small clothes, and the stress his parents try to hide. Will they survive? What will make them turn it around again?
Crenshaw takes us through the tough times a loving family experiences when difficult times consume their whole life. Gathering strength and courage to carry on in the face of dire circumstances is daunting, to say the least. But, what comes through, loud and clear, is that a family needs to be truthful with one another if there is any chance at all of survival. And, out of that truth, must come mutual respect and love that lives no matter what life throws our way.
A reflective and thoughtful book about homelessness and its effect on families. ...more

Conjuring up some age-old folklore, a magical, fantastical world opens up where an evil being named S.R. tries to lure Santa to him, in order to capture and use for his own evil purposes, Santa's power. Little does Jakob know that he is a Pole, one who has some powers of his own and can see what others cannot.
It is a battle against, not only evil, but time, as time is of the essence, if Santa is to continue delivering presents to good little boys and girls throughout the world. On a fateful Christmas Eve, Jakob and his three friend, Logan, Shig, and Fleep try their best to align with other good forces to defeat an enemy that has at his fingertips the ability and the power to defeat all that is good.
Catching Santa may appeal to some older, tween readers, but, in all honesty, do we really want to be reading about such evilness in conjunction with our beloved Santa...even if he isn't real? I, for one, think not.

But, because of Tamaya's mother's insistence that she not walk home alone from Woodbridge Academy each day and the fact that Marshall and Tamaya are the only ones who live on the same street, they share the trip home from school.
Marshall is bullied by Chad, a mean and vindictive classmate who challenges Marshall to a fight after school one day. Knowing that he cannot win and will be beaten up badly, Marshall chooses to walk through the dark and creepy woods that surround the school. Of course, Tamaya follows and it is not only because of her goody-two-shoes reputation, but also because she is fearful of the walk home alone. That is where, however, Marshall and Tamaya encounter the scariest of situations and walk into Fuzzy Mud, a strange substance that eats leaves and leaves a strange rash and blisters on those that come in contact with it. When Chad follows the two, unbeknownst to them at first, Tamaya unwittingly picks up the mud and throws it into Chad's face. They run and escape Chad's clutches for the time being at least.
The next day at school, both Tamaya and Marshall are frightened about Chad's retaliation. But, they get the biggest shock of their lives when Chad is missing and hasn't been seen since the encounter in the woods. The mystery of Chad's disappearance takes a toll on the town, but especially on Marshall and Tamaya now that Tamaya's hands are severly blistered and bleeding from the mud. What could it possibly have done to Chad's face?
What follows is a race to the finish line as this deadly, unknown disease is growing rampant without a cure. The CDC and the nation have pulled out the stops to find a way to reverse its ugly effects. Fuzzy Mud is a fast-paced mystery that will have every kid hunting for answers. A great read-aloud....more

At four, he was orphaned when his parents were killed in a horrific automobile accident. The loving, close-knit family he knew was no longer. Grayson, now a 6th grader, is living with his Aunt Sally and Uncle Evan and their sons, Jack and Brett. They see Grayson everyday, but don't see the struggle he is living through. Grayson is a girl trapped inside a boy's body. She's transgender.
Inside Grayson's mind, she wears a golden gown, pink t-shirts, and has long, flowing hair. But, lately those images are fading. When Mr. Finnegan, Grayson's humanities teacher tells everyone about the school play that will be performed at spring break, Grayson finally decides to join in the production. He is gifted, talented, and a natural-born performer. She tries out for the lead role, Persephone, a role she really wants. Finn is amazed by Grayson's reading and grants the role of Persephone to Grayson.
All sorts of trouble and backlash happen because of the decision and Grayson is faced with trouble from bullies. Classmates are cruel and evasive. His aunt is unprepared to deal with the issue and makes snap judgments that are not carefully thought through. Luckily, though, some unexpected friends pop up that are supportive and believe in Grayson...and Finn is backing the decision even in the face of harsh, vocal opposition.
As with any volatile disagreement, sides are chosen, and right and wrong are strongly challenged, each of the opposing sides believing they are justified. Gracefully Grayson deals with empathy, compassion, and coming-of-age. Discussion will most certainly be rampant and morals and ethics will be defended. A good follow-up or companion book to George. ...more

Disturbing and gruesome, Pretty Girls takes us inside the mind of a very clever and efficient psychopath, whose penchant for rape, murder, and tortureDisturbing and gruesome, Pretty Girls takes us inside the mind of a very clever and efficient psychopath, whose penchant for rape, murder, and torture is utterly incomprehensible. Paul Scott is brilliant and wealthy, a gifted architect who has made millions with his talent...yet he has a dark side, one which his wife, Claire, either chooses to discount or conveniently misses the clues. Paul loves Claire, but his thirst for her sisters' torture is even greater.
Julia went missing nearly 20 years ago at the age of nineteen. Never knowing what really happened to her, the family, which includes Claire's sister, Lydia, is torn apart. Their parents divorce because of the pain and anxiety and her father finally succumbs to suicide. Try as they may, every day brings them back to memories as a whole family. Paul worms his way into their life and Lydia senses he is bad news, but Claire won't hear of it. And, the family is torn apart, again, because of Paul.
When Paul is murdered right in front of Claire, she delves deeper into his business and finds some very disturbing videos. Her life with Paul was a sham, a mistake, a travesty. Events spiral out of control, and Claire must find a way to gather her strength and save all that is dear to her, even if that which is dear, has been estranged for a very long time. Even more painful are some beliefs which the family were certain of, were only a way for Paul to manipulate the truth. Nothing is as it seems and a horrific nightmare unfolds before the family.
Pretty Girls is a dark, utterly unfathomable fast-paced thriller which will leave many readers numb. How is this much evil possible? And, are we really clueless to it at times? Be forewarned, this is a tough book to get through, with its scenes of brutal torture and rape, yet it is very well-written. ...more

It was after Ralph's party more than a decade ago that the two became a couple.
Fast forward 11 or 12 years and Ralph and Jem barely recognize that couple that was head-over-heals in love with one another. Scarlet, 3 1/2 and Blake, months old, occupy their days with nursery, diapers, and sleepless nights. Ralph is blatantly unwilling to help in the day-to-day maintenance of family life and Jem resents it. That's when Ralph takes a mini, solo vacation to California in order to find himself and reenergize his fledging artistic career. When he returns, he has changed. But, Jem has changed too and instead of reconnecting, the two are splitting farther and farther apart.
Will they find a way back to one another and capture the essence of the couple known as Jem and Ralph or will other distractions, namely other possible romantic bystanders get in the way of the their happily-ever-after? After the Party is a love story which definitely has its array of emotions and detours that surely could take a toll on the couple. A realistic look at the hard work it takes to make a relationship work and the amount of perseverance and commitment it takes to keep it alive.
