The setting (Lake Manawa, Iowa) actually becomes one of the characters as the story progresses and I had so much fun visualizing the area around the lake. Marguerite Westing is a fantastic heroine - she is full of vim and vigor and won't conform to anyone's expectations, including the man who wants to marry her. Though her mother is pushing for the marriage, she is relying on her dad to let her marry for love not money... right? There are mysteries surrounding happenings at the lake, where everyone who's anyone is camping for the summer. It's hard for me to imagine camping as a sign of the "in crowd", but okay... I loved the history surrounding the lake as explained in the back of the book and I adored this story.

I want to make sure that my kids don't go through what I did and that I can help teach them some good tools to keep them from ever reaching the extreme high weight that I did. This book is a wonderful tool for that. The first half is really good to know educational information and the second half is how to implement good habits into your life over the next 90 days with your family. Very easy to read, well laid out and encouraging - this book is designed to help families make realistic changes that will set them up to live long lives together. I will be going through this book with my kids this year. I hope many families read this book to get a hold of the wisdom that Amy and Phil have gained the hard way so that their families don't have to go through the same thing....more

I love the characters, the dialogue is absolutely brilliant and this book and it's sequel "Death, Deceit and Some Smooth Jazz" are fantastic. You start with a single 30 something forensic psyshologist who has never actually been to a bad crime scene, her 40 something sister who is a medical examiner and then throw in a good looking, tall drink of water named Jazz who just happens to be a homicide detective. Mix that up at a crime scene and come away with Amanda Bell Brown starting in on an investigation dealing with cult leaders and their influence over people while crushing on some Jazz. There is some deep insight into some dark stuff while some amazing flirtation and sweet nothings between Bell and Jazz and her sister Carly is there to protect her. What a great book!...more
