I prefer young adult books that either have teen angst that I can relate to or are suspenseful, pageturners. I didn't expect this to be a suspense book but I hoped that the characters would be more believable, relatable and multidimensional. I'm confident that most teens would give this 3 or more stars but perhaps as an adult, I wasn't the intended audience. The library has a limited supply of audio books and this one was available. It still was OK and did the job of keeping me company while doing house work. ...more

Matt Rothschild lived a privileged childhood but his stories of not fitting in made it easy to feel sympathy for him. He is a great story teller and brought all of his family members to life. The characters were complex and he came across as honest. He certainly wasn't trying to paint a flattering picture of himself and/or blame anyone. Many of his stories were funny, some were touching and by the end I was crying. All the while I was rooting for him and I was sorry when the book ended....more

I didn't want it to end! It's the story of a teenage girl living in NYC in the 1930s who wants to become a famous actress. That's enough for you to know. What I loved about the book, was knowing nothing about it and having no idea of what direction it would go. I loved that it did not go in a predictable straight line as I imagined it would. I loved the tone and the pace of the book. Also it was an interesting setting for me. Most books from this time period are usually set a few years later and always turn into WWII stories. It was refreshing and interesting to read a lighter book in this time period. It's not a book with a very thick plot though so if you require that, then you might not be as enthusiastic as I am. ...more

I am in the company of only 4% of the other readers who were not impressed with this book. So many people loved it and it did absolutely nothing for me. My two stars does not mean that it was poorly written. In fact I make no claims as a literary critic. It just did not resonate with me. The only specific complaint I really have is that I did not enjoy the narrator of the audio book. She gave the main character this breathy voice that grated on my nerves. I looked the reviews of other people who gave this one and two stars because I wanted to better understand where it went wrong for me (and I wanted to feel less alone!) Interestingly, I wasn't the only one who was reviewing the audio version....more

Many people found the characters to be spoiled or unlikeable, overly analytical or they didn't like all the teen angst. One reviewer (K) pointed out very correctly that one of the characters kept having to remind you of how funny and charming she was because if she didn't tell you, it's likely that you wouldn't notice. I actually agree with that last bit and the book could have been better if the characters were in fact funny rather than told me that they're funny. The rest of the complaints didn't bother me though!
For some reason, I like teen angst but I don't always like books written for teens. This did not strike me as a book for teens. It reminded me of "Prep" in that the main character was introspective and not a lot happened plot wise but I enjoyed getting in the character's heads. As long as I can relate to the angst, I'm in. Maybe I identified because I went to sleep away camp every summer as a kid. Also, some of my closest friends are ones that I met in my teen years. I liked that the book spanned the life of the characters through age 50 and I'm about that age now. It wasn't a perfect book by any stretch but it held my interest throughout. I can see where it's not a book for everyone though.
I alternated between listening to it on audio and reading the kindle version. I thought it worked in both formats although at times the narrator picked an unnecessarily irritating voice just to distinguish between characters....more
