The author made the most of the great location of the story, letting the scenery provide a perfect atmosphere for both mystery and romance. The story starts right out in the thick of some action, guns and bar and all. Then moves right into some fun family issues and immediately starts to hint at romance, both throwing out the old and warming up to the possibility of some new. Fantastic characters, witty, sharp and deep keep you turning the pages along with a fast-pased plot that weaves in different genres flawlessly. All I need now is my own drink and sand!...more

The author created such raw emotions to blend her two characters lives together. I unfortunately understand the having a child in the hospital thing all too well, and Marsden handled it with great care to the reality of such a situation. The writing in this story was so well done, it showed in the character development, the plot line, the descriptions, etc. The details here, not overdone, made the story, tugged at my heart and wouldn't let go long after Id finished reading it. Ms. Marsden has an obvious passion and talent for her craft. I've always loved this author's paranormal stories, from werewolves to zombies, but now this gem is one of my favorites....more

The characters were so real, so honest, and I fell in love with each of them, hence why I have to go now and buy all the other books! What I really liked were all the little twists and turns, the surprises you don't often find in holiday romances. Not all the story lines turned out the way I thought they would, and yet, I found myself smiling st the end, pleased with each resolution. ...more

It started out rough for Shiloh, nothing new, and boy, once again, I loved the way she handled herself. I can say in all honesty, that this YA series so far is something that I would actually recommend to someone with teenage daughters, if you know what I mean. Great, strong, female character lead, and age appropriate content with quite the dark and paranormal edge to it. I think Sherry Soule has a great handle on what a paranormal YA series book should contain.
Honestly, I just love Shiloh. A great character. Strong and weak in all the right places. What she has to deal with is a lot, and she does so with the grace of a strong and big-hearted teen with special gifts.
The town, her friends, her enemies, are all portrayed well by Ms. Soule, written well, with a nice balance of description and action to keep a reader turning the pages. I look forward to more in this series. Oh, and can I say that I just love her book covers :)...more

Billy Bones: Beyond the Grave, A ChoI had so much fun reading this fantasy children’s story, and could not have been more impressed by how it worked. Billy Bones: Beyond the Grave, A Choose-Your-Own-Demise Novel, was like nothing I have ever read before. As you read about Billy, a boy who has recently died and finds himself in the AfterLife, you get to often choose what decision Billy makes. For example, Billy comes upon a dog. His coices are to walk away from it or to bring the dog with him. You click on your choice, and the story either continues on until the next decision needs to be made, or sometimes you make a “wrong” choice and meet an untimely end – of course this gives you the option to go back and change your answer too ;)
Billy is a great character too, and the comical and lighthearted way that Mr. Burton deals with a subject like death was great. In fact, I read a little of the beginning to my youngest, and my non-reader seemed pretty interested in the book – very high praise there! The mythology behind the AfterLife was pretty in-depth, yet I would say very easy to follow for the target audience – a great feat for a children’s book author. The plot was exciting and engaging, and you just didn’t want the story to end. I found attachments with not only Billy, but also many of the friends he meets along the way. I actually found myself going back and taking the other choices just to see what would happen, that is if I didn’t meet an untimely end. LOL
As a mother of two boys, I could not recommend this book more highly! I was impressed all around from characters to setting to the elaborate and reader-driven plot. Creativity at its best here, and as a 40+ year old woman, I’m anxiously awaiting another book. Here’s hoping for a series! ...more

First, the writing style is descriptive, a dark sort of poetic, gritty I must say in a literary way. I was drawn in immediately by the tone the language created, one modern, eerie, and realistic. The descriptions brought a believable depth to the setting. The main characters were tough but real, cynical but still goal-oriented hopeful. They both had drive, dreams, and did what they had to, to get by, to live life their way.
This was a suspense and horror-filled tale from one page to the next. The setting of Grit City, the blog and newspaper writing characters, the bloody plot, it was all excellently executed. But, lets get to the illustrations in the story. They were vague, surreal, but poignant, open to reader interpretation, but still dead on, only enhancing the story being told. They gave me something more to focus on, something more to think through, adding to my own visualizations as I read. I always rate a story by how much it makes me “see”. This story was already creating clear pictures, but then added in its own from time to time. They were great additions, a brilliant idea for the ebook era.

The strength of the writing was consistent, edgy, even if this was a more magical, fantasy tale. The greatness of this tale was in the depictions of magic actually. The spells or rituals were complex, detailed in steps and tools used. The mythology was sound, and while different easy to follow, riding a nice balance with the suspense built of the unknown elements. I know personally how hard that is to achieve.
There were complicated relationships set up in this tale, ones that tugged on your heart, as well as incited other emotions. The plot was unique and engaging, the fantasy characters believable, the writing superb, the descriptions and illustrations wonderful. As an author with many pubs, I am very impressed with the caliber of authors Grit City has published. Seriously, that is one of the best compliments I can give. ...more

It really helps the reader realize what hardships we can that our military men and women go through. My father being a Vietnam vet it was always so clear to me that under the freedom they provide, we are gloriously ignorant of what they go through. This was such a well told story, a journey really, of one mother to balance all her roles including the great sacrifice of going to war. ...more

With vampires, werewolves, witches and humans, all pretty much old school mythology and forbidden to love, in war and in the bedroom, I put them against each other, their strengths and their weaknesses. I actually created a chart, found all the ways they could fight, love, hurt, heal, etc. What fun!...more
