While I understood that theirs was a matriarchal society, I couldn't understand why the main male characters were under the control of females weaker than them (magically speaking) and forced to be sex slaves or watch as people they cared about were destroyed... for hundreds even thousands of years and not try to become free. I also couldn't understand why someone would let his kids be tortured for honor and abandon them or how there were facilities were little girls were violently abused and killed and nobody did something about it. Also, most of the problems could have been solved had the people most concerned with Jaenelle's just sat down, talked and PLANNED. That drove me nuts.
There was no happinness in this book and apparently no love. Could a society really be this corrupted and sick? Maybe. I hope not.
There were also several boring parts that could have been edited. Jaenelle could have been more than a super powerful, happy despite circumstances girl, Daemon could have been less of a poor tortured soul with temper tantrums (why didn't he just kill all the queens that used him was beyond me since clearly the ring of obedience wasn't enough to stop him) and Saetan... oh Saetan... he was more Santa Claus than the Prince of Darkness or High Lord of Hell.
I'm usually drawn to "lighter" dark fantasy books (less nasty sex, less ick factor overall) but I was curious. For some reason and even though several times I felt dirty while reading it, I am willing to try the next one. ...more

Instead it's just a school play that was prepared and performed well. Not dramatic enough, in fact no any-kind-of-emotion enough.
