I loved the rapport between Sam and Jack from the beginning. It's fun and snarky, and I definitely laughed out loud a few times while reading. Jack was sweet and romantic, and not an over-the-top alpha hero like you frequently find in romance novels. It was refreshing to read a book starring a nice guy. (Julia Quinn also rocks at nice-guy heroes!) Sam was a bit angsty at times, but it was believable and never overdone.
The small town setting was fun, especially with the holiday competitions going on around town. We met a few interesting side characters that I get the feeling will star in upcoming books in the series. Sam's interactions with her father were fun and endearing, and there's a bit of romance happening for him, as well.
My complaints? (Because there's always something!) 1. I would have liked the story to be a bit longer. Because Sam and Jack were already friends, the relationship still felt well-developed, but I just wanted more of the story.
2. The ending felt a bit rushed. It was adorable and definitely had that "Awww" factor, but I wanted more. This is the first in a series, so I'm sure I'll be seeing these characters again in subsequent books, though, which helps.(less)

Not only did I finish the rest of the series, I've read Richelle Mead's other books as well. I still stand by my original review (this is probably my least favorite book of hers), but for others who might have felt the same way about this book, I suggest persevering through at least the second in the series before making a decision about it.
I honestly don't understand all of the positive, glowing reviews this book received. I thought it was pretty horrible. This is the first book I've read by Richelle Mead, and I have to say that I am less than impressed with her writing skills.
There was not one likable character within the book (maybe Dimitri, but only because he's a sexy Russian!), and Rose was particularly unbearable. She comes off as having a huge attitude problem: snotty, sarcastic, and self-involved. I think she was intended to seem strong and spunky, but she just came off as a very mean person. She spends time lamenting how mean everyone has been to her and Lissa since their return while (hello!) she's dishing it right back just as bad. All the swearing bothered me too. Generally it doesn't, but it felt really forced in this book, like the author was trying to show us how "tough" Rose was. I think it is very hard to read first-person narration when you can't stand the narrator, which is probably the main reason I won't be picking up the next one. (Although I do admit to being mildly curious what will happen next.)
Aside from that, there was no character development whatsoever, the relationship (or lack thereof) with Dimitri was lukewarm at best, and there are many instances where things are told, not shown, which makes for boring reading.
So if I have so many complaints, why not give it one star, you ask? It kept me occupied one night when I couldn't fall asleep, and I did actually like the plot. Now if only a better author could have taken that plot and made it into a series that was actually readable...(less)

It was okay, but not my cup of tea. I'm not sure what about it didn't appeal to me, although an unappealing love interest was probably part of it. It...moreIt was okay, but not my cup of tea.
